Railway History and Landscapes in the Aisne Valley

Erezée combines a distinctive railway history with diverse opportunities for active and culture-focused holidays. The Tramway Touristique de l’Aisne, or TTA for short, is considered the first tourist railway on mainland Europe. Its journey showcases the nature, biodiversity and bucolic landscapes of the Aisne Valley. This creates an excursion experience in which the historic railway line and the landscape are equally central.

The TTA runs along the former vicinal railway line between Érezée and Dochamps. The site includes a museum dedicated to the history of the line and the association. On the chestnut-lined Place Capitaine Garnir stand a picturesque mid-20th-century kiosk made of sandstone and wood, as well as a cast-iron pump with plant decoration dating from the second half of the 19th century.

Those interested in the region’s history can include the Circuit du Souvenir in their plans. The route passes through the municipality of Érezée and provides access to commemorative plaques, memorial slabs, monuments, as well as battlefields and sites of battles. At 48 km long, it is designed for cars or bicycles. It is therefore suitable as a longer day trip in which historical stops set the theme and pace of the journey.

Two walking routes begin at the station of the Tramway Touristique de l’Aisne at the Érezée roundabout. The “Au fil de l’Aisne et du temps” hike is 9.5 km long and marked with a blue rectangle. “La Glacière” is significantly shorter at 2.3 km and has a red rectangular marking. These different route lengths provide simple guidance when planning your trip around either a longer hike or a more compact walk.

Cyclists will also find several options. The RAVeL begins at the Érezée roundabout. In addition, Érezée has three mountain-biking routes ranging from 20 to 52 km in length. There is a charging station for electric bicycles at the Royal Syndicat d’Initiative, 1A Rue du Pont d’Érezée, 6997 Érezée. When choosing your holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore consider whether your days away should be shaped more by hikes, a cycling tour, a historical circuit or a ride on the TTA.
