Saint-Monon: Traditions and History

The Remuages de Saint-Monon procession takes place every year on the Sunday after Ascension Day. The tradition involves participants rubbing young spring branches, which have begun to sprout again, against the relics of Saint Monon. This is believed to protect their animals or crops. The custom thus links an annual event with a long-standing practice and its purpose of providing protection.

The Saint-Monon Chapel is also linked to the local tradition: it stands on the site where Saint Monon is said to have had his oratory. After a fire, the chapel was rebuilt in 1843 and restored again in 1944/45. The Collegiate Church of Saint-Monon stands at the centre of the village of Nassogne. It houses a reliquary containing relics of Saint Monon and a bone of Saint John the Lamb. The church is surrounded by an old, disused cemetery on slightly higher ground, with a lime tree avenue planted in 1803.

Land Art and Forest Landscapes

LAN – Land Art Nassogne is a contemporary art centre dedicated to Land Art. It is located at Pré-Lacroix and at Château du Bois – Pavillon Bonaparte, in the heart of the Nassogne forest. At Château du Bois, LAN exhibits Land Art works by Belgian and international artists. Contemporary art is therefore among Nassogne’s defining themes, alongside its traditions and church history.

Hiking routes offer further ways to experience the landscape: one passes close to the Les Goffes pond; another runs through the Forêt de St-Michel forest massif, where coniferous and deciduous trees grow. These routes bring different named landscape features into view, from the pond to the forest massif.
