Castle, Castle Ruins and Local Culture

Schwertberg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1327. It probably dates back to the second half of the 13th century, when it was built on a rocky outcrop on the right bank of the Aist. The original complex essentially comprised what is now the castle area with its tower, courtyard and residential buildings. The castle can be viewed from the outside, making it a visible historical destination on a walk through Schwertberg.

The Windegg Castle Ruins also tell the story of the town's past. They were built in the 12th century by canons of Regensburg Cathedral and first mentioned in a document in 1208. The ruins can be reached on foot via the Schwertberg circular hiking trail. This allows a visit to the castle ruins to be combined with a hike.

The Aiser open-air stage was founded in May 1965 as the Schwertberg amateur theatre group. The Lichtenwagner Cultural Centre offers further insights into local culture: archaeological finds from restoration work on the Windegg Castle Ruins are displayed there. It also houses a horn-turning museum and a collection of door locks. The cultural centre can be viewed from the outside; it is open during public events or exhibitions.

Hiking Trails, Leisure Meadow and Cycle Route

The leisure meadow along the Aist is a practical point of reference for hikers. All Schwertberg hiking trails begin at the car park there, where free parking spaces are available. The leisure meadow has children's play equipment, a beach volleyball court and a large sunbathing lawn. Those travelling with children can combine exercise with a quieter break here, while the starting point of the hiking trails makes further planning for the day easier.

For cyclists, the R30 Aist-Naarntal cycle path is one of the tangible factors in travel planning. The cycle path is 48 kilometres long in total.

The Weltstein is another feature of Schwertberg's landscape. At 478 metres, it is the highest point in Schwertberg. The Schönböck Chapel, also known as the Lina Chapel, stands below the Weltstein. Together with the trails, the Aist and the historic buildings, this creates various focal points for a trip, from cultural discoveries to outdoor activities.
