Straß combines an evocative place name with a landscape shaped by the Aist-Mühlbach, the Danube wetlands and the open Machland Plain, each offering a different impression. The name refers to a place on the old road; Straß also appears in descriptions of several routes that pass through riverside forests, wetlands and rural side roads. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can use these landscape features as a starting point for planning your trip.

Streamside vegetation and terrace slope

Along the Aist-Mühlbach near Straß, there are short, natural stretches of flowing water with narrow strips of trees and shrubs, including alder, ash and willow. The stream and the trees create a varied landscape; these three tree species give the narrow strip its distinctive character. Another landform lies between the commercial area north of Straß and the Bach farmstead near Naarn in the Machland: there is a terrace slope 3 to 5 m high. A 2002 survey describes it; vegetation and accessibility may have changed since then. Thus, a narrow waterside margin and a pronounced change in elevation stand side by side as distinct landscape features.

Routes between the Danube and the Machland

At the hamlet of Straß, the R1.13 Alpenblick Loop leaves the Danube through its riverside forests and then crosses the wide Machland Plain on rural side roads. Its description thus connects the Danube’s edge with the open plain and also notes the character of the roads along the rest of the route.

At the hamlet of Straß, the R1.12 Weltstein Loop reaches the Danube again through riverside wetlands. The loop also includes a stretch along the river embankment on the legendary Treppelweg towpath. The distinction is specific: the Alpenblick Loop is described as crossing into the Machland Plain on rural side roads, while the Weltstein Loop is described as returning to the Danube through wetlands and following the Treppelweg.

A section of the R1 Danube Cycle Path on the north bank in the municipality of Au an der Donau–Naarn runs from the area near Hayraulik Wurm to just before the access point to the Straß Danube embankment.

Local history and visiting with a dog

Straß refers to a place on the old road. The place was first mentioned between 1075 and 1209 in a charter of St. Nicholas Monastery near Passau. The name and the early mention offer two specific historical points of reference for the local history.

A notice dated October 11, 2023, states that dogs must be kept on a leash outside the settlement in the wetland area southwest of the Aist-Mühlbach, from the village of Straß to Tabor. If you are travelling with a dog, check the local regulations before your trip.
