The building was first mentioned in 1796 and was acquired by the market town of Naarn in 1989 to establish a local history museum there. The ensemble reopened in June 2014 with an exhibition on boat trains, timber rafting on the Aist and Danube log rafting.

The Danube, the fish pass and routes through the Machland

An observation tower at the fish pass provides views of the facility and far-reaching vistas across the plains of the Machland.

The area can also be explored by bicycle on characteristic routes. The alternative cycling route “Take a Look into the Machland” leads through the municipal area of Naarn and through the market towns of Au and Naarn. Along the way, you pass typical Vierkanthöfe farmhouses and rural inns and cross a short stretch of untouched riparian forest before the route reaches the Danube Cycle Path again. The Au/Donau boatmen’s and raftsmen’s chapel is located directly on the Danube Cycle Path and adds a historic site along the cycle route to this focus.
