Discover Marz

Marz combines the landscape of the Rosalia Mountains with diverse trails, historic buildings and vibrant traditions. The village lies in the valley of the Marzerbach, in a hollow of the Wulka Plain measuring around 20 kilometres across, and is surrounded by low, partly wooded hills. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Marz can therefore plan their stay according to very different interests: cycling tours, hikes, nature observation or cultural discoveries.

Landscape and trails around Marz

Marz is one of the 13 municipalities in Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park. The Rosalia Mountains strongly shape the landscape and provide the village with a natural setting for excursions. When choosing your accommodation, it may be useful to first decide what kind of activity you would like to undertake: Would you like to cover longer distances by bicycle, take a hike with a set starting and finishing point, or combine visits to natural areas with cultural sightseeing in the villages?

The B30 “Koglweg” cycle path is 34 kilometres long and almost entirely paved. At the same time, it has challenging sections, particularly around the Marzer Kogel. It therefore clearly distinguishes between the desire for a longer, predominantly paved cycling tour and the willingness to plan for some demanding stretches. The R50 cycle path runs along the B50 federal road and also passes through Marz.

Another option is the hiking trail through the Rohrbacher Kogel area, also known as Marzer Kogel, and the Teichwiesen meadows. The route is nine kilometres long and takes around three hours. It starts and ends at the Marz–Rohrbach tennis facility and includes a detour to a birdwatching point at the Teichwiesen meadows. The Rohrbacher Kogel nature reserve and the Teichwiesen nature and landscape conservation area extend across the cadastral communities of Marz, Rohrbach bei Mattersburg and Loipersbach in Burgenland.

Nature experiences for different days of your holiday

The trails make it possible to vary your stay without committing to just one type of trip. A cycling tour on the B30 “Koglweg” has a different focus from the approximately three-hour hike through Rohrbacher Kogel and the Teichwiesen meadows. Those travelling with children of different ages can adapt their daily plans to their respective interests: observing nature at the birdwatching point is a different activity from a longer cycling tour with challenging sections.

The “Werkstatt Natur” also expands the range of activities with nature-related experiences. It offers environmental education courses, training sessions and guided tours during which visitor groups are taken through the forest. Extracurricular activities also include family afternoons in the forest and holiday camps.

Culture, buildings and regional traditions

Marz has several notable examples of local and architectural history. The Catholic parish church of the Coronation of Mary is a single-nave building of originally Gothic design, enclosed by a medieval defensive wall. The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk was built in 1767 above the Heiligbrunn spring. This spring had already been mentioned as an old pilgrimage site in 1699. The chapel’s Rococo frescoes are particularly striking and rank among the most significant in Burgenland.

Another special feature is the wayside column. It dates from the 15th century and is considered the only Gothic column in the whole of Burgenland. Individual buildings such as these give a stay in Marz a cultural and historical dimension that can easily be combined with an excursion into the countryside, without the holiday having to be devoted exclusively to sporting activities.

The Herold Mill is also part of the village’s history. It was built in 1777 and expanded in 1843 with a residential and utility wing. The mill contains a tall, spacious room beneath an open roof structure, with working platforms, the former milling equipment and an open fireplace. The historic character of the complex makes it an interesting destination for anyone who would like to discover not only nature and outdoor activities during their trip, but also the craftsmanship and architectural traces of times gone by.

A living tradition can be seen at the Robischkirtag festival. At this event, Robisch young men and women dance in traditional village costumes and dirndls around the decorated Robisch staff at Ambrosius-Salzer-Platz. The traditional ribbon dance is the highlight of the Robischkirtag. If this festival falls during your travel period, it provides a cultural experience that clearly differs from a hike or cycling tour.
