Discover Mattersburg: Cultural Trails, History and the Wulka Valley

Mattersburg combines urban history with varied trails through culture and landscape. Seven cultural hiking trails with a total of 124 cultural points invite you to discover the town’s history and cultural features on foot. There are also historic sites, a distinctive railway viaduct, cultural centres and paths through wooded areas.

Cultural trails for different daily itineraries

The seven cultural hiking trails offer different ways to explore Mattersburg. Cultural Trail 1, called „Short Town Centre“, is around 1.7 kilometres long and includes 18 stops and 50 cultural points. This makes it a comparatively short route where you can explore numerous cultural topics in a compact circular walk. Cultural Trail 6, „Municipal Protected Areas“, is around 12.3 kilometres long and leads to 21 stops with 36 cultural points. If you are travelling with different interests, these two trail lengths make it easy to decide whether a compact town walk or a more extensive hike is better suited to your daily itinerary.

The hike „Up to the Rosalia“ also has its own focus. It leads from Mattersburg through shaded woodland along well-maintained forest roads. A short section of a hiking trail also runs through Walbersdorf and Mattersburg. This allows you to divide your days between cultural and historical stops and paths through nature, without focusing your trip exclusively on a single theme.

Historic traces in the town

Mattersburg was first mentioned in a document in 1202 as „Villa Martini“. Further historical references can be found at various points throughout the townscape. Judengasse was first mentioned in 1644, and a small Jewish memorial stone stands on Brunnenplatz. Mattersburg’s parish church is dedicated to Saint Martin. These places and names make the town’s development visible in different ways and provide additional points of reference along the cultural trails.

One of the distinctive structures is the Mattersburg railway viaduct, completed in 1847. The railway viaduct in the Wulka Valley near Mattersburg is 250 metres long. The Bauermühle Mattersburg is a cultural and events centre. The Wulka floodplains are home to Burgenland’s first cultural centre, which served as a model for the whole of Austria. The „70s House of Stories“ is an information centre, archive, and contact and information point for visitors.
