Holiday Apartment in Tuminec – History, Churches and Hiking

Tuminec combines cultural history and landscapes at Lake Prespa. In the village of Tuminec (Kallamas), a prehistoric settlement was inhabited around 7,000 years ago during the Middle Neolithic; it is located near the shore of Lake Prespa.

History

Hundreds of flint tools and ceramics were found at the prehistoric settlement site. In addition, it contains a collection of ground stone tools that is unique in the Balkan region. Traces of prehistoric residential structures were also discovered, including platforms made of fired clay and bases for wooden posts. The site therefore preserves several different clues about life in this place.

Culture

The Monastery of Saint Mary lies northeast of Tuminec, 200 meters from the shore of Lake Prespa, and was founded in 1888. Its feast is celebrated every year on July 30. The monastery is a pilgrimage site for residents of the Prespa region, visitors, and foreign tourists.

The cave church of Saint Mary is located near the Monastery of St. Marena in the village of Tuminec and near the border with North Macedonia. It is a 13th-century cultural monument and is known for the Byzantine iconographic style of its frescoes. The Church of St. Mitri is also located in the Tuminec cemetery. It dates from the 14th century. Its famous frescoes were created by an unknown artist and bear similarities to the icons of the Zrze Monastery in Prilep.
