Discover Dongshan from several perspectives: coffee growing and cafés along 175 Coffee Road, a hiking trail up to Kantoushan, sandstone formations and a long-standing procession tradition. There are also views across the Jianan Plain and the upper Jishui River catchment. When planning your trip, it’s worth distinguishing between the landscape, coffee and cultural experiences: each gives your stay a different focus.

Coffee Growing and Cafés Along 175 Coffee Road

175 Coffee Road is associated with coffee growing in Dongshan and extends beyond Dongshan District. Numerous cafés, each with its own character, line the road. Some offer views; others provide a look at coffee plants and coffee production. The experience ranges from exploring the different cafés to learning about growing and processing, though not every café offers the same things.

If coffee is important to you, you can choose what to focus on according to your interests: are you more drawn to the cafés and the views some of them offer, or to the plants and production? If you want to make coffee growing a particular focus of your trip, you can also take these interests into account when choosing a vacation rental in Dongshan.

Hiking Trail, Rock Formations and Views

A hiking trail leads from Dongshan Fuyou Temple to the summit of Kantoushan, which is 884 meters high. Along the way, the trail passes Stone Toad and Lover's Rock. Both the summit destination and two named points along the route help you find your way and give the hike a distinct landscape profile.

Known sandstone formations, including Xiandan Rock and Toad Rock, lie in the area around Kantoushan. They add a geological perspective to the route’s landmarks, Stone Toad and Lover's Rock. Alongside the hiking route, visitors interested in the shapes of the rocks will find another aspect to explore when discovering Kantoushan.

Another perspective opens up from the plaza in front of Fuyou Temple: the view extends across the Jianan Plain and the upper Jishui River catchment. The plain and the catchment are both in view. This makes a stop to take in the scenery different from a hike with its summit destination and named waypoints—two different ways to experience Dongshan’s landscape.

Temple Tradition and a Hands-On Honey Experience

An annual procession tradition that dates back more than a hundred years is observed at Dongshan Bixuan Temple and is classified as an important national folk custom. Its longevity and annual recurrence make it a cultural focus in its own right. For travelers interested in traditional customs, it offers a different perspective from coffee or the landscape.

The Donghe Bee Culture Tourist Factory offers a hands-on activity: visitors can experience a simulated honey harvest and take part in DIY activities. These include making a bee magnet from modeling clay and a bee-puppet pen. While the procession introduces a long-standing tradition, the focus here is on the simulated harvest and making things. Check current visiting hours separately.
