Jhansi lies between the Pahuj and Betwa rivers. Its history can be explored through its fort, palaces and temples. Museums, gardens and venues for cultural events are also part of the city’s character. When choosing your holiday rental, consider whether you mainly want to discover Jhansi’s history or include destinations in the surrounding area: the city is known as the gateway to Bundelkhand and has rail and road connections.

Jhansi and the History of Rani Laxmibai

Jhansi Fort in the city centre was one of the main centres of resistance to British colonial rule during the 1857 uprising. Rani Mahal is also associated with Rani Laxmibai: she lived there from 1853 to 1857. Another place connected with her story is the Ganesh Temple in the old town. Raja Gangadharrao married Manikarnika Tambe there in 1842; she later took the name Rani Laxmibai. A marble statue of the god Ganesh stands in the temple’s sanctuary. The Raja Gangadharrao Chhatri, a cenotaph built by Rani Laxmibai in memory of her husband, is right next to the Mahalakshmi Temple.

Those interested in different architectural and cultural traditions can also include Saint Jude’s Church in Civil Lines in their exploration. It combines Christian and Hindu architectural styles. The feast of Saint Jude is celebrated there every year for a week. Near Jhansi, the 700-year-old Karguvanji Jain Temple is an important pilgrimage site for Digambar Jains.

Museums, Parks and Events

The Government Museum Jhansi offers various ways to explore art and history through its collections. On display are terracottas, bronzes, weapons, sculptures, manuscripts, paintings, and gold, silver and copper coins. Highlights include weapons, statues, garments and photographs relating to the Chandela dynasty, as well as a picture gallery on the Gupta period. The Major Dhyanchand Museum has a different focus. It features a cyclorama, a holographic selfie, interactive games, other exhibitions and a replica of the Major Dhyanchand National Hockey Stadium in New Delhi. The museum is located in Rani Laxmibai Park in Civil Lines.

For a more relaxing change of pace, explore the area’s green spaces: the government gardens in the Narayan Bagh area are home to numerous plant species, seasonal flowers and very old trees. A vegetable, fruit and flower exhibition is held there every year in February. Atal Ekta Park in Civil Lines combines a park with a large library. Its cultural amphitheatre is a venue where folk artists from the Jhansi division perform their art and other acts. The annual Jhansi Mahotsav is a week-long festival organised by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Board and the district administration.

Staying in the City and Exploring the Surrounding Area

Jhansi has the Virangana Lakshmibai Railway Station (VGLB). Frequent trains connect this major railway hub with large Indian cities; it is also on the Delhi–Mumbai rail route. State buses and taxis are available for road travel. Jhansi has a good road network and is located on National Highway 27. These connections can help you decide whether to use your holiday rental mainly as a base for exploring the city or for trips around the surrounding area.

Garhmau Lake lies about 2 km outside Jhansi on NH 25 in the direction of Kanpur. This natural tourist spot is suitable for picnics and day trips. Other destinations require longer excursions: the reservoir of the Parichha Dam on the Betwa, near the town of Parichha, is about 25 km from Jhansi and is considered ideal for water sports. Sukma-Dukma Dam, with its inspection tunnel beneath the dam, is about 40 km away. Those interested in historic temples will find the Kedareswar Temple near Mauranipur, about 67 km from Jhansi. It was built from stone in the 12th century during the Chandela period; in its sanctuary, a Shiva lingam rests on the back of Nandi. The Ram-Janki Mandir, decorated with murals, is also well outside the city, about 80 km away in the village of Singar. To explore another place in this area, get to know Samthar.
