Agra is shaped by Mughal architecture and gardens; further afield, there are lakes, birdlife and a large river sanctuary. The Taj Mahal, historic tombs and gardens offer different highlights for your trip. When choosing your holiday rental, first consider which places you want to explore: cultural history, gardens or nature can each shape your stay in a different way.

Discover Mughal history through its architecture

The Taj Mahal is a monumental mausoleum made of white marble. It was built between 1631 and 1648 on the orders of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife. The building stands on the right bank of the Yamuna, in a Mughal garden covering almost 17 hectares. Official visiting hours are from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes before sunset—useful information for planning your day.

The Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah also tells the story of the Mughal era: Empress Nur Jahan had it built between 1622 and 1628 for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Fatehpur Sikri belongs to a different historical chapter. Emperor Akbar founded the city in 1571; it served as the capital of the Mughal Empire for about 14 years. Fatehpur Sikri is home to the 54-metre-high Buland Darwaza. Visitors interested in imperial history and architecture will find a distinct focus here, alongside Agra’s tombs.

At Agra Fort, history comes with a view of the Taj Mahal: from Musamman Burj, visitors can see the mausoleum on the riverbank. Shah Jahan spent his final years at Musamman Burj. Travel information also sets this site apart: Agra Fort railway station and the metro station are directly at Agra Fort.

Gardens with distinct character

Mehtab Bagh lies on the left bank of the river, directly opposite the Taj Mahal. The restored charbagh has fruit trees and paths; as a viewpoint, it offers the chance to admire and photograph the Taj Mahal, especially at sunset. The garden and the view of the mausoleum are the main attractions of this visit.

Akbar’s tomb is in Sikandra, within a vast 119-acre charbagh. The five-storey pyramid of sandstone and marble combines Hindu, Islamic and Persian design motifs. Ram Bagh has a different character: terraced paths, water channels and pavilions define the grounds, while its shady gardens are well suited to morning walks. The Tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani is also near Sikandra, a tomb converted from a Lodi baradari and set in a walled garden. Visitors wishing to compare gardens and architectural forms can treat these places as separate points of interest.

Birdlife and nature further afield

Keetham Lake, in the Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, is home to more than 126 species of migratory and resident waterbirds. The sanctuary is in Agra District, along the Delhi–Agra Highway. Several smaller paths branch into the woods from the walking path. You can combine a visit to the lake with a walk along the existing paths, with birdlife as the main natural attraction.

Further afield in the region, the National Chambal Sanctuary extends across the districts of Agra and Etawah. The inter-state sanctuary covers 5,400 square kilometres. It provides a habitat for the endangered gharial, the red-crowned roofed turtle and the threatened Ganges river dolphin. If you want to focus on this wildlife, consider the sanctuary as a separate regional highlight.

Include places and travel options in your planning

Regular UPSRTC buses to Fatehpur Sikri run from ISBT and Idgah, and taxis are also available. City buses go to Akbar’s tomb; auto-rickshaws and taxis are also available. This information shows that travel plans can vary depending on your destination. Choose a holiday rental based on the places that matter most to you, and take the available transport options into account without drawing conclusions about distances or journey times.

For further orientation, you can also find Agra, Kagarol, Basai, Kiraoli, Bah and Kahrai here.
