Kannauj combines an internationally renowned fragrance and flavour industry with a varied river landscape. Much of life in the city revolves around perfume: the Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre offers insights into production and development, while the Ganges and various wetlands reveal other sides of the district. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering whether you are mainly interested in fragrance culture, religious sites or nature.

Perfume-making traditions and your own fragrance creations

Kannauj, or Uttar Pradesh, attar is made from natural ingredients. The fragrances distilled by experienced perfumers include rose and jasmine. At the Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre (FFDC), research, development, training and innovation in the fragrance and flavour industry are central. Laboratories, training facilities and demonstrations offer a close-up insight into perfume production.

If you are particularly interested in traditional methods, you can add the Perfume Distillery Tour to your plans: it takes you through an old perfume distillery and explains distillation methods that have been practised for centuries. The Create your Own Fragrance experience offers a different perspective. Visitors can blend their own fragrance from more than 500 ingredients. An early-morning tour of an aromatic farm and the opportunity to take part in seasonal flower picking are part of the Aromatic Farm Experience. These experiences offer different highlights—from seeing how perfumes are made to creating your own and visiting a farm in season.

Wetlands, birds and the Ganges

Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary lies near the village of Lakhbasohi in Kannauj district. It includes the two oxbow lakes, Lakh and Bahosi, as well as adjoining wetlands, covering 80 square kilometres. According to the description, more than 50,000 birds visit the two lakes each year, including the endangered Greater Spotted Eagle. Hara Taal offers another aspect of the region’s natural landscape: this freshwater wetland near the village of Ismailpur Digan covers around 24.6 hectares. Eighteen bird species have been documented there, including four species in the IUCN Red List’s RET category.

The Ganges also shapes the district. The river enters Kannauj at Chiasar and leaves the district again at Daipur, flowing through it for about 49 kilometres in between. Numerous irregularly shaped river islands divide the river into several channels. Ganges dolphins are regularly sighted on the riverbank near the village of Daipur in connection with the Arth Ganga Trail. Nature lovers can therefore explore not only the lakes but also a river landscape with its own distinctive features.

Cultural sites and religious traditions

The Kannauj Archaeological Museum houses numerous terracotta figurines associated with the region’s ancient art and cultural history. Mehndi Ghat, now also known as Mahadevi Ghat, lies on the Ganges and is linked to the city’s cultural and literary heritage. Thousands of devotees visit the ghat each year for Ganga Dashahara, Kartik Purnima and Ashadh Purnima to take ritual baths and perform religious rites. A one-faced Shiva lingam, known as an Ekmukhi Lingam, is worshipped at Gauri Shankar Temple.

Chiyasar Ghat is considered a destination for spiritual, cultural and nature-based tourism, including meditation and yoga. On special occasions such as Kartik Poornima, Buddha Poornima and Ganga Dushera, residents of Chiasar and nearby villages gather at Chawan Rishi Ashram and the adjoining Durga Temple. If you would like to discover the different sides of Kannauj, this part of the trip offers a different focus from a visit to the fragrance sites or wetlands.

Getting there and choosing your focus

Kannauj lies on the broad-gauge railway line between Kanpur and Mathura and is served by express and passenger trains. The district can be reached via National Highway 24; on the access information page, the road is referred to as the Delhi–Kannauj–Kolkata GT Road. If rail connections and amenities in the city are important for your trip, they may be a useful starting point when looking for a holiday rental in Kannauj. The page about Kannauj provides additional information if you would like to focus specifically on the city.
