Karur brings together the history of the early Chera kings, temples, museums and a tradition of handwoven textiles that remains well known today. During the Sangam period, the city was the capital of the early Chera kings. Those planning a trip to Karur can therefore choose between historical and religious attractions in the city, festivals held during specific Tamil months, and destinations in the district.

City History, Temples and Textiles

The Chera Site Museum was established in 1982 to showcase the archaeological potential of finds in and around Karur. The Govt. Museum offers a different perspective: it is on Old Dindigul Road in the Jawahar Bajar neighbourhood and opened to the public in 2000. Together with the history of the Chera period, these two places are a reason to consider Karur as a destination for culture enthusiasts.

The Pasupatheeswarar Temple is a city landmark. Its sculptures include the Pasupatheeswarar Lingam, a cow giving milk and a Rangamatha. The Arulmigu Mariamman Temple is in the heart of Karur. The temples offer different points of interest within the city: visitors interested in religious architecture and sculptures can take these features into account when choosing places to visit.

Handwoven textiles also shape Karur’s reputation. They are famous in the city and attract many visitors, particularly those shopping for clothing. This makes a stay focused on textiles and city life different from a trip that mainly includes temple destinations outside Karur or scenic spots in the district.

Festivals and Destinations in the District

For trips planned around temple festivals, the dates are especially relevant. The annual Brahmotsavam at the Arulmigu Pasupatheeswarar Temple is celebrated in the Tamil month of Panguni, from mid-March to mid-April. The annual Vaikasi Utsavam at the Karur Sri Mariamman Temple takes place in the Tamil month of Vaikasi, from April to May, and lasts 21 days. Another festival is the 15-day Bramotschavam at the Arulmigu Rathinagreeswarar Temple in Ayyermalai.

There are more temple destinations outside the city. The Arulmigu Kadambaneswarar Temple in Kulithalai is dedicated to Lord Kadambaneswarar and is 45 km from Karur. A temple dedicated to Arulmigu Rathinagreeswarar is in Ayyermalai, which is 8 km from Kulithalai. In Thanthonimalai, 5 km from Karur, the Arulmigu Kalyana Venkataramana Swamy Temple stands on a raised part of a hill. These places can be considered as separate highlights when planning a trip, rather than being grouped with temple visits in the city.

The district’s landscape also offers different impressions from the city. Ponnaniar Dam is a picnic spot near the village of Pooncholai in the Kadavoor hill region and was built at the foot of Semmalai. Mayanur Barrage lies on the banks of the Cauvery River and is a picnic spot as well as a well-known tourist attraction in Karur district. Arulmigu Sadasiva Brahmendra Adhishtanam, a Jeeva Samadhi, is also on the banks of the Cauvery in Nerur. The Adhishtanam and the Arulmigu Kashi Vishwanatha Temple are in the village of Nerur in Karur district, 13 km from the Karur–Thirumukkudalur road. Thirukkampuliyur Amma Park is another place to visit in the district.
