Virudhunagar offers many different reasons to visit: at Ayyanar Falls, forest scenery and a waterfall meet mountain hiking, while temples and the Government Museum offer insights into religious traditions and diverse collections. The Sathuragiri Hills provide a different focus, with a long climb and restricted public access. When choosing your holiday rental, consider whether nature experiences, culture or both will shape your trip.

Forest and hikes around Ayyanar Falls

Ayyanar Falls lie on the eastern slopes of the southern Western Ghats. The forest around the falls is home to the grizzled squirrel and the Varaiyadu goat and is considered a protected area. Tourists use the area near the waterfalls for mountain hiking in the forest. If you are interested in this natural side of Virudhunagar, it offers a specific starting point for planning your trip.

A permit from the Forest Department is required for trekking to Ayyanar Falls. Take this requirement into account when planning a visit. This makes the hike different from a simple outing to a freely accessible destination: obtaining a permit is part of planning the trek.

Sathuragiri Hills: a climb with restricted access

The Sathuragiri Hills are also called Mahalingam Hill. The first climb to the summit takes nearly four to five hours. This time estimate is an important point to consider when deciding how much of your trip to devote to the climb. Allow enough time for the excursion rather than treating it as a short detour.

There is also a special access rule: public access to the Sathuragiri Hills is limited to six days per month around the new and full moons, with three days during each of these lunar phases. This makes timing especially important here. If you would rather focus on cultural sites and collections, you can discover Virudhunagar with a different focus.

Temple traditions and collections

Srivilliputhur Andal Kovil is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Sri Vishnu. Tamil hymns associated with Andal and Periyalvar are recited there daily. The temple also has sculptures and old drawings. Religious worship, poetry and visual art come together here, making the site especially interesting for travelers who want to explore Tamil culture.

Other religious sites have different points of interest: the Bhuminathaswamy Temple in Tiruchuli is one of the 14 famous Shaiva centers in Pandya Nadu. Irukkankudi Mariamman Temple is located at the confluence of the Arjuna River and the Vaipparu River. The Panguni Uthiram festival at Virudhunagar Parasakthi Mariamman Temple lasts 21 days. These different temples and traditions offer several cultural themes for your trip, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single site.

The Government Museum in Virudhunagar displays a wide-ranging collection: stone sculptures, photographs of coins, Indian coins, fossils and prehistoric tools, as well as leather puppets, herbarium sheets, different types of wood, terracotta objects, musical instruments, mollusk shells and insects. The collection spans everything from natural specimens and archaeological finds to crafts and sound. Pallimadam is also home to a sculpture shrine, now called Kalainathaswamy Koil, built over the tomb of Sundara Pandya.
