Nilgiris: Gardens, Peaks and Nature Experiences
Accommodation in Nilgiris
Nilgiris brings together unusual plant life, striking viewpoints and nature experiences that offer a variety of ways to shape a trip. You can consider visiting gardens and a flower show, taking a drive along a designated visitor route in a tiger reserve, or riding the narrow-gauge railway. When choosing your holiday rental, it is worth first thinking about which aspects of the destination you would most like to explore.
Peaks, Forest and Sweeping Views
At 2,623 metres above sea level, Doddabetta is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu. The summit is surrounded by dense shola forest, and the Telescope House offers panoramic views across the district and beyond. Forest and far-reaching views are both central to a visit here. Near Coonoor, Dolphin's Nose is a rocky viewpoint overlooking St. Catherine Falls. Lamb’s Rock, a steep-sided rock outcrop several hundred metres high with good views of the Coimbatore plains, is also a picnic spot near Coonoor.
The Pykara also shapes the district’s landscape: it is the district’s largest river. The last two Pykara waterfalls are 55 and 61 metres high, respectively. Boating is available on Pykara Lake. The river, waterfalls and lake offer a range of ways for visitors to include waterscapes in their trip.
Forest Landscapes and Botanical Gardens
Mudumalai Tiger Reserve covers 321 square kilometres at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Its landscape includes tropical evergreen forest, moist deciduous forest, moist teak forest, dry teak forest, secondary grassland and swamps. Visitors can take a vehicle safari along a designated route through the jungle. Those interested in different types of forest and landscape will find a different perspective here from the viewpoints and gardens.
In Ooty, the Rose Garden brings together more than 3,000 varieties of roses. Sims Park is both a park and a botanical garden; it was laid out more than a hundred years ago along the natural contours of the land. It is home to unusual deciduous and ornamental plant species from various parts of the world. Every May, the Government Botanical Garden in Ooty hosts a flower show as part of the Summer Festival in Ooty. Sims Park also hosts an annual vegetable and fruit show. These garden visits and events can help shape the focus of your trip.
Culture, Tea and Getting Around
The Tribal Museum is located on the campus of the Tribal Research Centre in Udhagamandalam in Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu. It displays artefacts from around 36 different tribal ethnic communities in Tamil Nadu. The Tea Factory and Museum presents the history of the tea industry and tea-making methods in the Nilgiri region. The two visits offer different cultural perspectives: artefacts from various communities at one, and the history and processing of tea at the other.
Glenmorgan and Singara are also good picnic spots. Glenmorgan has a tea plantation and a lake at the foot of the plantation, which serves as a forebay for the Pykara power station at Singara. A viewpoint above the rest house in Glenmorgan offers panoramic views. Ooty Lake has facilities for recreational boating. When choosing your accommodation, you can use the places and experiences that matter most to your trip as a guide to deciding where to stay.
