Chhatarpur offers a range of reasons to plan a trip around culture or nature: the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, collections on the region’s history, and special places such as Bhimkund and Raneh Fall. When choosing a holiday rental, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your days. Temple art and dance culture offer a different focus from a museum visit or exploring natural sites.

Experience Temple Art and Dance

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments in Chhatarpur district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It includes Hindu and Jain temples. The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple stands out in particular for its wealth of intricate sculptures. Their detailed craftsmanship, symbolism and expressiveness reveal aspects of ancient Indian art. Visitors interested in architecture and sculpture can discover a different side of the temple group than its religious diversity.

The Khajuraho Dance Festival showcases classical Indian dance styles: Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Kathakali. These different forms give the festival a broad artistic range. The festival can therefore provide a cultural focus of its own for your trip.

Collections at the Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum

The Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum is housed in an old palace in Dhubela. It has eight galleries. Two of them display inscriptions, copper plates, sati pillars, lingas and inscribed sculptures from the Gupta and Kalachuri periods. Visitors encounter written records alongside religious and artistic forms of expression.

Other exhibits include clothing, weapons and paintings belonging to the Bundela kings. The museum visit thus encompasses objects and artworks from earlier periods as well as evidence of courtly culture. If these collections are of particular interest to you, you can include Dhubela as a point of reference when looking for accommodation, rather than basing your choice solely on the temples.

Shrines, a Cave and Waterfalls

Jatashankar is a Hindu shrine in Bijawar tehsil, Chhatarpur district. The site served as a shrine to Shiva and is a pilgrimage destination. Jatashankar also has two spring-fed pools: one with cold water and one with hot water. If you are interested in religious sites, you can explore the shrine and the unusual contrast between the pools as different aspects of your visit.

Bhimkund lies near the village of Bajna. Its pool is inside a cave, about three metres from the cave entrance. The water is considered so clear that fish swimming in it can be seen distinctly. Bhimkund is a natural water source and a sacred site associated with the age of the Mahabharata. The combination of a cave pool and religious tradition makes it a different nature and culture destination from the temples of Khajuraho.

Raneh Fall is a natural waterfall on the Ken River in Khajuraho. The described journey from Khajuraho is by bus, followed by a taxi from the town. If you would like to include this waterfall in your plans, you can take the journey into account as a separate part of your day, without combining it with the other sights into a single route.

More Cultural Experiences and Regional Cuisine

Aadivart was established as the cultural village of Madhya Pradesh. It features replicas of the homes and everyday objects of the seven major tribes—Gond, Baiga, Bheel, Bharia, Korku, Kol and Saharia—as well as all five cultural regions: Baghelkhand, Bundelkhand, Malwa, Nimar and Chambal. The variety of homes and everyday objects on display offers insight into the state’s diverse cultural traditions.

Regional dishes can also shape your stay. Khurchan is a sweet from Chhatarpur district made from pure milk. Daal Baati is a traditional dish from Chhatarpur and is available in most restaurants and hotels. If you would like to discover local specialities through food, these two dishes offer different flavours: a dessert and a traditional savoury dish.

For travel, Khajuraho has HJR airport, with connections to Delhi, Agra, Varanasi and Mumbai.
