Khajuraho is best known for its temple art: the buildings combine richly decorated surfaces and soaring silhouettes with motifs on sacred and secular themes. There is also a museum dedicated to tribal art and culture, as well as natural attractions in the surrounding area, including a granite gorge and several waterfalls. This means that travel options range from architecture and culture in town to striking landscapes beyond Khajuraho.

Temple Art with a Wide Range of Themes

Khajuraho’s three temple groups showcase examples of Nagara architecture and sculpture. Elaborate carvings and soaring silhouettes define their appearance. The temple surfaces feature anthropomorphic and non-figurative motifs, with sacred and secular themes side by side. The sculptures depict, among other things, worship, clan and minor deities, couples in union, domestic scenes, teachers and learners, dancers, and musicians. The imagery therefore ranges from religious depictions to scenes of everyday life. Sculpture and architecture come together harmoniously in the temples.

Individual buildings make their own distinctive impression. The walls of the Lakshmana Temple depict gods, goddesses, and other finely crafted figures; some sculptures explore fertility and love. The Javari Temple stands on a high platform and has a raised shikhara and a finely crafted makara torana arch. The Brahma Temple is dedicated to Shiva and houses a four-faced lingam in its sanctum. The materials also differ: the temple is made of granite, while its shikhara is built of sandstone. Those interested in architecture can look beyond the figures to the buildings’ forms and materials.

Gorge and Waterfalls Nearby

About 20 kilometres from Khajuraho, the Ken River has carved a five-kilometre-long, 30-metre-deep gorge in crystalline granite. The rock features shades of pink, red, and grey, and several waterfalls lie within the gorge. At Raneh Falls, larger and smaller waterfalls carry water throughout the year. Water levels vary seasonally, and additional seasonal waterfalls appear during the monsoon. Downstream from Raneh Falls, where the Ken and Khudar rivers meet, lies the Ken Gharial Sanctuary.

Another natural attraction is Pandav Falls in Panna National Park, 34 kilometres from Khajuraho. Fed by a tributary of the Ken, the waterfall flows year-round and plunges into a heart-shaped pool. The Ken Gorge and Pandav Falls thus provide two specific distances to consider when planning your trip; their landscapes also differ, from a granite gorge to a waterfall pool.

Museum and Cultural Experiences

The Adivart Tribal & Folk Art Museum in Khajuraho combines a recreated tribal village with a museum. The houses represent seven major tribal communities of Madhya Pradesh; the museum section focuses on their lives, art, and culture. A look at the state’s communities thus complements the temple art and its sacred and secular imagery.

In the garden of the Western Group, a sound-and-light show organised by the tourism department explores the history of Khajuraho and the former Chandela dynasty. The Khajuraho Dance Festival takes place against the backdrop of the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. If you would like to include the festival as a fixed part of your itinerary, check the event dates before travelling.

When choosing a holiday rental, your travel priorities can help guide your decision: the temples and museum are in Khajuraho, while the gorge and waterfalls are outside the town. The Ken Gorge is about 20 kilometres away, and Pandav Falls is 34 kilometres away. If you would like to combine culture and landscapes, factor these distances into your plans. You can then tailor your search to the aspects of Khajuraho described here that matter most to your trip.
