Sonitpur
Accommodation in Sonitpur
Sonitpur brings together river landscapes, natural areas and a diverse cultural history. Tezpur lies on the banks of the Brahmaputra and connects many of the district’s cultural attractions with experiences on the water. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether you mainly want to explore temples and historic sites, experience the landscape, or combine both. These interests can also help you choose a suitable base when looking for a holiday apartment.
Places in the district include Tezpur and Ghahi Gaon.
Nature and river landscapes
Nameri National Park covers 200 square kilometres and forms the core area of the Nameri Tiger Reserve. It borders Arunachal Pradesh. Tigers, elephants and great hornbills are associated with the park. Visitors can go rafting on the Jia Bhoroli River at the park’s southwestern edge—an added attraction for anyone looking to combine a stay in Sonitpur with an experience on the water.
Other protected areas also showcase different types of landscape. Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the Laokhowa-Burachapori ecosystem. It features moist alluvial grasslands, riparian and evergreen forests, wetlands and a river system. Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Himalayan foothills and offers scenic beauty and wildlife. Those making natural areas a focus of their trip can consider these destinations as distinct priorities when choosing where to stay.
In Tezpur, two other places invite visitors to experience water and landscape in different ways. Agnigarh is a hill on the banks of the Brahmaputra, offering panoramic views of the river and Tezpur. The hill features mythological sculptures, an open-air stage, giant mushroom sculptures and a large waterfall. Padum Pukhuri is a lake with an island; the island has been developed as a park with a musical fountain. Boating is available on the lake. Chitralekha Udyan, also known as Cole Park, also has facilities for water sports.
Discover Tezpur’s culture and history
Chitralekha Udyan was laid out in 1906 by the British Deputy Commissioner, Mr Cole. Two large decorated stone pillars and other sculptural remains define the park. Those interested in the region’s cultural history will find other distinctive remains in Tezpur: the Harjar Varma rock inscriptions date from 829–830 CE. The rock on the banks of the Bharmaputra, about two miles downstream from Tezpur, and the inscription are among Assam’s centrally protected monuments or sites.
Near Tezpur, the ruins of the doorframe of the Da-Parbatia Temple lie a few kilometres from the town. The carvings on the doorframe are characteristic of the early Gupta school of sculpture; the ruins are considered one of the finest and oldest examples of sculpture in Assam. The sculptural remains on Bamuni Hills date from the ninth and tenth centuries CE. Together, these sites offer a glimpse into different periods and forms of sculpture.
Temples are also part of Sonitpur’s history. The Mahabhairab Temple north of Tezpur is an ancient temple where Shivaratri is celebrated on a large scale. Ten kilometres north of Tezpur, Ahom king Rudra Singha had the Haleswar Temple built in 1705 CE. Nag-Sankar Temple is near Sootea, east of Tezpur. It includes a large pond with hundreds of rare softshell turtles.
Jyoti Bharati (Poki) was the ancestral home of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, a formative figure in Assamese culture. Its architecture combines Rajasthani and Ahom styles. In 1977, the Agarwalla family handed Poki over to the Government of Assam for preservation as a monument; the Jyoti Bharati cultural centre was established there in 1978. This site offers a distinct perspective on the region’s cultural heritage, complementing its temples and sculptures.
Getting there and choosing when to visit
Tezpur is the administrative headquarters of Sonitpur district and is well connected by road, air and rail. The best time to visit Tezpur is roughly between October and April. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can use the outings and experiences you want to enjoy as your starting point: Tezpur offers several cultural attractions, while the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries provide distinct nature-focused options.
