Misty hills, rushing waterfalls and special encounters with nature and culture define North Cachar Hills. Its places and experiences offer different highlights: birdwatching takes centre stage in Jatinga, Umrangso combines lake and landscape views, while Maibang offers insights into the history of the Dimasa Kingdom. This lets you choose the focus of your trip rather than reducing the region to a single way of exploring it.

Hills, Water and Special Nature Experiences

Dima Hasao is characterised by lush vegetation, misty hills, sparkling streams and rushing waterfalls. Haflong is considered the only hill station in Assam. From the Gallery View-point, panoramic views extend across the city of Haflong and the Borail Hills. If you would also like to experience the landscape while travelling, you can include the historic railway connection in your trip: built during the colonial era, the line has since been converted to broad gauge and passes through many tunnels on its way to Badarpur in the Barak Valley.

Panimur, on the Kopili River, features numerous waterfalls and rapids. The place is especially suited to sightseeing, picnics and camping. Also on the Kopili, a dam built by NEEPCO created an artificial lake near Umrangso. At Umrangso Lake, you can go boating and picnic by the water; the surrounding hills also offer opportunities for trekking and exploring largely untouched areas. The Bendao Baglai Waterfalls are on the Abong River, about 5 kilometres from the village of Samparidisa, which is near Haflong.

Wildlife and birdwatching also add a distinctive seasonal dimension to a trip. Jatinga is a birdwatching destination; August to November are considered the best months for it. In Umrangso, Amur falcons make a brief stopover in October and November during their migration from Siberia to South Africa. Hajong Lake is a habitat for rare hill terrapins, and seven different species have been recorded there. Orchids, parrots and rabbits are kept at the Haflong Botanical Garden.

Cultural Sites and Local Traditions

Maibang was the historic capital of the Dimasa Kingdom. It is home to the Ramchandi Temple, a two-storey monolithic temple carved from a single rock. In Panimur, the Dimasa community reveres the site as a pilgrimage destination; sacred bathing takes place there on Magh Purnima. These places appeal to different interests: Maibang can be explored through its historical role and the temple’s distinctive architecture, while Panimur can be discovered through its religious significance.

Jatinga Ethnic Village is a model village that showcases cultural features of the hill region. There, you can see traditional sleeping houses and homes belonging to different tribal groups, and gain insights into their daily lives and traditions. Laisong, in turn, is a cultural centre of the Zeme Naga community. Dima Hasao’s cultural heritage is connected with numerous communities, including Dimasa, Jeme-Naga, Hmar, Kuki, Biate, Hrangkhol, Khelma, Karbi and Vaiphei.

Special events include a festival at Umrangso Golf Field in Dima Hasao that celebrates the annual arrival of the Amur falcons and promotes bird conservation and environmental awareness, as well as a festival in Haflong centred on Judima. This traditional rice wine of the Dimasa community has GI status. Umrangso is also known for traditional dishes of the tribal communities, including specialities made with bamboo shoots, smoked fish and sticky rice.

Catering to Different Travel Interests

For a trip focused on scenery and outdoor activities, consider the options around Umrangso described above; if you are interested in birdwatching, you can include Jatinga and the months of August to November, considered the best time to visit. You can explore Haflong on foot, and visitors can take short hikes in the Haflong Valley. Umrangso also has a natural 18-hole golf course. Tularam Cave offers an adventure-focused exploration of dark chambers and natural formations.

Elevation also shapes the character of some places: Thuruk is widely considered the coldest place in Assam. The sharp drops in temperature are attributed to its elevation and the topography of the surrounding hills. Depending on whether you are interested in nature watching, cultural experiences, history or active exploration, you can give these places different priority. You can also discover Baga as another destination.
