Discover Dima Hasao
Accommodation in Dima Hasao
Waterfalls along the Kopili, mountain landscapes and places with their own cultural history define Dima Hasao. In the district, you can choose from nature experiences, walks and historical discoveries: Panimur is known for its waterfalls and rapids, while Maibang is known for its history as the capital of the Dimasa Kingdom. Birdwatching and shorter treks are also among the possible activities. When looking for a holiday rental, it is therefore worth first considering which of these sides of the district will shape your trip.
Water, mountains and distinctive natural sites
Panimur is located on the Kopili River, where you can find numerous waterfalls and rapids. The area is used for sightseeing, picnics, camping and other tourist activities. It is also an important pilgrimage site for the Dimasa tribe: sacred baths are taken there every Magh Purnima. Panimur thus combines nature with a religious custom, offering visitors interested in local culture a distinctive perspective.
Umrongso is defined by an artificial lake created by a dam on the Kopili River. There is also a natural 18-hole golf course there. The Falcon Festival, which includes environmental workshops, is held at Umrongso Golf Field. Umrongso also has resting places for Amur falcons, which stop briefly there in October and November during their migration from Siberia to South Africa. The seasonal presence of the birds and the festival are separate reasons to take an interest in the area.
The mountains and wildlife also offer specific starting points for planning a trip. At 1,866 metres, Thingthubung is the highest peak in the Borail Range and is located in Dima Hasao district. Hajong Tortoise Lake is a biodiversity heritage site in the Langting-Mupa Reserve Forest, about 21 kilometres from Maibang. It is a natural habitat of the endangered Black Softshell Turtle (Nilssonia nigricans). Birdwatching is offered in Jatinga, with August to November considered the best months for it. Killing birds is prohibited there.
Walks, activities and culture
Haflong is the district headquarters and the only hill town in Assam; it lies at an altitude of 966 metres. You can explore Haflong on foot, walk to villages with orchids and take shorter treks in the valley. You can also stroll along the banks of Haflong Lake. The Bendao-Baglai Waterfalls are on the Abong River, about five kilometres from Samparidisa, a village near Haflong. BendaoBaglai is also a place for trekking and hiking in the district. If you are looking for a holiday rental and want to focus on walks and cultural activities, Haflong can serve as a base.
Maibang is especially appealing to travellers interested in history and architecture. As the historic capital of the Dimasa Kingdom, it is known for its stone inscriptions, ancient monoliths and ruins. The two-storey Ramchandi Temple was carved from a single rock and bears inscriptions dating to 1761 AD. Laisong, in turn, is home to a cultural centre of the Zeme Naga tribe. These places represent different cultural connections within the district.
The Judima Festival in Haflong celebrates Dimasa culture. At its centre is Judima, the community’s traditional rice wine, which has GI status; the festival also features handicraft exhibitions and food. Gunjung is a place for paragliding. The options therefore range from cultural events and historic sites to active pursuits.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
