Weihai’s urban coastal character is especially evident at Happiness Park. The open coastal park brings together tourism, recreation, shopping, dining and entertainment. Rather than focusing on a single activity, it offers several reasons to spend time on the urban waterfront. This raises a practical question as you plan your trip: should you experience Weihai primarily as a coastal city, as a destination for themed park visits, or also through its cultural history? The following places offer different highlights.

Happiness Park: Coast and City in View

Happiness Park covers 20 hectares and stretches from Tiyu Road in the north to Jinxian Ding in the south. To the east, the park looks across the water towards Liugongdao; to the west, it borders the central business district. The coast and an urban area thus serve as two spatial points of reference. The park’s north–south extent gives it a character of its own, while its varied functions go beyond a single focus.

From north to south, the five coastal sections are called 海韵、海阅、海赋、海情 and 海翔. This sequence divides the park into named areas. Together with its different uses—from recreation and entertainment to shopping and dining—it shows that Happiness Park cannot be reduced to a single reason to visit. Its waterside location and connection to the business district create a different setting from a park devoted to just one theme.

Tides and “Homecoming” at Yuehai Park

A different theme takes centre stage at Yuehai Park: a tide square showcases tidal phenomena associated with the sea and playfully introduces the process of biological evolution. Two distinct perspectives come together here—the tides and the development of life. The playful approach offers a concrete introduction to a rather abstract topic and a reason to discuss both aspects as you explore together.

At the centre of Yuehai Square stands a lighthouse with the thematic significance of “Homecoming”. Within the same park, it adds a distinct symbolic note alongside the tide square’s nature-related themes. The motif gives the site another dimension: alongside marine phenomena and biological development, there is the idea of returning home. The themes within Yuehai Park thus remain distinct without converging on a single message.

Cultural History on Liugongdao

Another way to explore history is to visit nearby Liugongdao. The island has relics from the First Sino-Japanese War, including the Qing-era admiralty office of the Beiyang Fleet, a naval academy and old gun emplacements. These sites represent different areas: administration, training and military installations. Visitors interested in history can therefore find several kinds of historical evidence on the island—not just a single building or monument. In this way, Liugongdao offers a different focus from the park themes of recreation, tides and evolution.

Another cultural destination is the Weihai Museum in Huancui District, on the third floor of the Culture and Arts Centre at 2A Jimo Road. Visiting regulations published in 2023 listed opening hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with Monday as the closing day; public holidays were exempt. Check the current opening hours before visiting.

Choosing the Right Holiday Apartment for Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Weihai, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: urban coastal life with recreation, dining and entertainment; a park visit centred on tides and evolution; or historical and cultural sites on Liugongdao. If you want to combine several themes, decide which one will have the greatest influence on your choice of location. Then compare the specific location of a holiday apartment with the places you plan to prioritise during your stay.
