The wider Linyi area brings together cultural themes ranging from the history of calligraphy and archaeological finds from Han tombs to regional commemorative culture. There are also museums, crafts and a riverside eco-park. If you plan your trip around your interests, you can choose among very different perspectives: writing and stone inscriptions, finds and exhibitions, or designed landscapes.

Wang Xizhi and the Legacy of Calligraphy

In the wider Linyi area is the former residence of Wang Xizhi, a classical garden and building complex. It is designated a cultural heritage site of Shandong Province and a national 3A-rated tourist attraction. Four themed areas are named Yanchi Huaigu, Qushui Liushang, Xiyang Puzhao and Qianqiu Wuxian. The complex includes exhibition halls for Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, the Hall of the Shrine of the Five Sages and the Goose Pond.

Stone inscriptions and works are also part of this cultural focus. These include the Jiliu Stele, the imperial stele of the Langya Shrine of the Five Sages, the Orchid Pavilion picture, and the “Seventeen帖” and “Langya帖”. The Xiyanchi Jin tombs are also located on the grounds of the former residence. They were designated a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 2006. In this way, the history of calligraphy, the garden and building complex, and the archaeological heritage are brought together under one theme.

The nighttime performance “Meng Hui Xizhi” depicts Wang Xizhi’s life as a calligrapher and the elegance of the Wei-Jin period. Its production features a stage, lighting effects and dramatic presentation. An article published by the municipal culture bureau in May 2026 described the performance as being staged regularly; this timing is useful to bear in mind if you are interested in the programme.

Han Tombs, Bamboo Slips and Military Texts

The Yinqueshan Han Tomb Bamboo Slip Museum in the wider Linyi area is China’s first archaeological site museum dedicated to Han tombs and bamboo slips. Its main exhibition comprises seven halls focused on Han tombs, bamboo slips and military texts. More than 7,500 bamboo slips were unearthed from the two Yinqueshan Han tombs.

The exhibitions cover topics including the Yinqueshan Han tomb site and archaeological finds, bamboo-slip editions of “The Art of War” and “The Art of War by Sun Bin”, as well as bamboo and wooden tablet culture and traditional Chinese military culture. The main building has separate exhibitions for the two works; the Han Tomb Hall displays reconstructions of Western Han tombs No. 1 and No. 2. VR technology digitally presents exhibition scenes and the objects on display there. The result brings together the history of the finds, the transmission of texts and different forms of presentation.

Museums and Historic Sites in the Wider Area

The Yimeng Revolutionary Memorial Museum presents exhibitions on the Yimeng Spirit, the Party’s mass-line education and the Yuhua martyrs. Photographs, films, objects and sculptures are part of the displays, alongside reconstructed scenes and audiovisual and lighting effects. Linyi Museum is a national first-class museum. It has four exhibition levels, a comprehensive themed exhibition on history, seven special exhibitions and several rotating temporary exhibitions.

The Confucius Temple, located in the wider Linyi area, was designated a cultural heritage site of Shandong Province by the provincial government in 1992 and added to Shandong’s list of historic buildings in 2021. The two dates mark different stages in its official recognition and give the site a distinct place alongside the archaeological and museum themes.

Cultural Route, Wood Art and Landscapes

A description published in 2024 of the route “Visit the Home of the Sage of Calligraphy and Experience the Old Langya Charm”, recognized as a cultural route of Shandong Province, mentions a visit to Wang Xizhi’s former residence. Other stops and experiences described include a Langya paper-cutting experience with Miguang Culture in the small commodity city and the purchase of paper art products, as well as a wood culture exhibition and a wood-rubbing experience at the Tianze Museum of Wood Culture.

The Tianze Museum in the wider Linyi area displays rare wood species and artworks made from old wood. It also combines exhibitions on intangible cultural heritage with educational and science programs, as well as leisure and tourism. The route description also mentions Yizhouli’s nighttime streetscape, the Yizhouli Cultural Heritage Product Shop and the Qianhe Guozipu Cultural Heritage Workshop. Another stop is the Wang Family Ripe Pear Exhibition Hall, which offers a tasting of the Wang family’s ripe pears. If you plan to visit these stops described in 2024, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

For a different perspective on the wider area, visit Linyi Riverside Eco-Park. It includes nine squares and 18 themed areas and is one of China’s first 18 water landscape areas. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether to plan your trip around calligraphy, Han archaeology, regional commemorative culture, crafts or landscapes.
