Qingdao: Marine Life and Cultural History
Accommodation in Qingdao
Marine science, maritime architectural history, and cultural heritage appeal to different travel interests in the wider Qingdao region. Qingdao Underwater World offers a natural history focus, while Zhanqiao and other cultural sites tell stories of different construction phases and historical figures. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Qingdao, these different themes can help you organise your travel interests.
Marine Science and Interaction
Qingdao Underwater World comprises four underground levels and ten exhibition areas. It showcases more than 1,000 species and tens of thousands of marine animals. These figures convey the scope of the exhibition: it brings together many different species and a large number of animals, while also organising the subject across several levels and different areas.
An interactive marine science education area complements the exhibition. It includes an underwater touch wall and an area for feeding fish. Alongside the diversity of the species on display, there are specific themed areas that explore marine life in different ways. For trip planning, this creates a clear focus on marine science, with exhibition areas and interactive elements rather than simply a collection of names.
Zhanqiao: Construction History in Several Phases
Zhanqiao is in Shinan District, within the wider Qingdao region. It was built in 1892 as an iron-and-wood structure with a wooden deck and was then about 200 metres long and 10 metres wide. In May 1901, it was rebuilt and converted into a cargo pier. During this reconstruction, it was extended to 350 metres, and its northern end was built in stone.
A further extension followed in September 1931, when Huilan Pavilion was added at the southern end. This sequence makes the changes easy to follow through specific features: first, the original construction and dimensions; then, its conversion into a cargo pier, with a change in length and the material used at the northern end; and finally, the pavilion at the southern end. Those interested in architectural history can trace this development through the structure, its use, and individual additions, year by year.
Residence and Cultural Heritage
Another historical site in the wider region is the former residence of the German Governor of Jiaozhou. It is located at the southern foot of Signal Hill, at 26 Longshan Road, in Shinan District. The building was constructed between 1903 and 1907 for the German Governor of Jiaozhou and is also known as 总督楼. Its construction dates and original purpose provide a specific historical context; describing it as a former residence also makes clear its past function.
Qingdao Cultural Celebrities Sculpture Park offers a different cultural focus. Established in 1994, the park features statues of 20 deceased historical cultural figures, including Gao Fenghan and Pu Songling. The figures depicted were from Qingdao or lived there. These two connections—place of origin and later life in the area—can be distinguished when considering the selection.
Choosing the Right Focus for Your Trip
The regional themes differ considerably: Qingdao Underwater World focuses on marine life and marine science exhibitions, while Zhanqiao tells its story through its construction, dimensions, and renovations. The former residence and the sculpture park offer their own distinct focuses on architectural history and cultural figures, respectively. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Qingdao, first consider which of these perspectives you would like to shape your stay most.
