Uiwang-si
Accommodation in Uiwang-si
Uiwang-si offers several ways to shape a trip: the Railway Museum explores the history of railways in South Korea, Cheonggyesa offers a look at temple history, and Moraksan provides views across several cities. At Wangsong Lake, bird ecology and experiences at the Rail Park take centre stage. When choosing a holiday rental, consider which of these interests you would like to define your stay.
Railway history and special exhibits
The Railway Museum presents the history of railways in South Korea in an engaging educational setting. Among its nine registered cultural properties are the President’s salon car and the service car of the commander of the UN forces stationed in Korea. These vehicles give your museum visit concrete historical reference points: they show that, alongside the development of rail transport, the collection also covers special-purpose cars and their respective functions.
The museum grounds are also part of what makes the museum distinctive. The outdoor exhibition includes around 2,600 exhibits of real railway vehicles. If you are interested in technology and railway history, you can explore an extensive collection of real vehicles as well as learn about their historical context inside the museum. This is a distinct cultural focus for your trip, quite different from visiting a temple, watching birds or taking a rail-bike ride.
Temple history at Cheonggyesan
Cheonggyesa is a traditional temple and a cultural heritage site of Gyeonggi-do Province. It is located halfway up Cheonggyesan; its address is 475 Cheonggye-ro, Uiwang. On the grounds stands a commemorative stele about the temple’s history, erected in 1689 and also designated as cultural heritage by Gyeonggi-do Province. Next to it is Geungnakbojeon Hall, which is thought to date from the late Joseon period. The different dating details should be kept distinct: the year 1689 is given for the stele, while the hall is dated more tentatively.
The temple therefore offers more than just a name to add to your itinerary: the stele brings the history of the site to life, while the hall provides another historical point of interest on the grounds. If you are particularly interested in cultural sites and their historic buildings, Cheonggyesa makes a distinct stop alongside the technical collections at the Railway Museum.
Summit views and experiences at Wangsong Lake
At 385 m, Moraksan offers summit views of Uiwang, Anyang, Gunpo, Gwacheon and Seoul. If you are looking for views across several cities, this offers a different focus from the museums and historic buildings. A sunrise event is held at the summit on January 1. This gives you a specific reason to include Moraksan in your travel plans at the start of the year.
There is a signposted walking route to Wangsong Lake Park from Uiwang Station on the line towards Suwon: from Exit 1, you can reach the park on foot in about 20 minutes. This approximate journey time is a useful point of reference if you plan to include the park in your stay.
The Uiwang Bird Ecology Science Museum focuses on birds that breed at Wangsong Lake and on natural ecology. Visitors can learn about these topics, observe them and experience them firsthand. Telescopes for birdwatching are available on the rooftop terrace, which also offers views of the surrounding landscape. In this way, the museum combines natural history with opportunities for observation. Uiwang Rail Park offers a different experience: it is the first rail-bike park with a track that loops around a lake near Seoul. The park includes a photo area, a bird habitat area and a speed course.
