Pyeongtaek-Si brings Korean culture together with US military culture, a connection associated with Camp Humphreys, which is stationed in the city. The range of things to explore is just as broad: modern and traditional music, history, market life and water activities sit side by side. You can shape your trip around whether you would rather explore cultural sites, discover local specialities or make time for the lake.

Music history and places of remembrance

Located in the Pyeongtaekho Tourist Complex, the Korean Modern Music Hall is a cultural complex devoted to modern Korean music, with a museum, library and archive. Its collections cover music from the Japanese colonial period and music by supporters of colonial rule, as well as the independence movement, music education, music from North Korea and Japan, and modern pop music. This range of subjects offers different ways to explore Korea's musical history.

The Korean Modern Music Hall is closed on Mondays, public holidays, and the day before and the day of Seollal and Chuseok. Check visiting hours before your trip. The Korea Soriter Arts Center includes Ji Young-hee Hall, the Pyeongtaek Nongak Village outdoor stage, and the Eoullim-dong and Dodeurim-dong buildings. It also has an outdoor stage and a library for traditional Korean music.

At Pyeongtaekho Art Park, you can view sculptures as you stroll. The Ji Young-hee Gugak Center and Haegum Bench there commemorate Ji Young-hee (1909–1980), a nationally designated holder of intangible cultural heritage. She helped popularise traditional Korean music and bring it to international audiences. Outdoor art and musical remembrance come together here.

Pyeongtaekho: the lake and water activities

Pyeongtaekho is an artificial lake covering an area of 24 km². It was created in 1973 by building a 2.5-kilometre-long seawall at the mouth of the Anseongcheon. The Pyeongtaekho Tourist Complex includes event venues, facilities for water sports and other water activities, and walking trails. Alongside the music venues, the area offers a different focus for planning your day: spending time by the water rather than exploring collections and cultural history.

Markets and specialities

Pyeongtaek Central Market was established in 1958. After a nearby US military base was set up, traders and customers gathered there to exchange agricultural produce directly. Today, the market has restaurants and general stores offering goods from Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, Japan and other countries. Budaejjigae, handmade burgers and Chicago pizza are among the specialities associated with the market. Individual businesses and offerings may change.

The history of budaejjigae is also closely tied to a particular period: the dish originated during wartime, made with food from US bases in Korea. If you are interested in local food culture, you can explore this background alongside the other specialities associated with the market. Market history and cuisine offer two different perspectives on Pyeongtaek's development.

A historical contrast and choosing where to stay

Another facet of the region's history is Simboksa Temple in Deokmok-ri, Hyeondeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek-si. It is said to have been founded in the late Silla or early Goryeo period. Daejeokgwangjeon Hall houses a Vairocana Buddha statue in the style of the late Silla and early Goryeo period; it is Treasure No. 565. The temple adds a religious and art-historical focus to the stories of modern music and markets.

When planning your trip, compare your interests: the lake, water sports and walking trails offer a different focus from music history, places of remembrance, temples, markets and cuisine. Decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay, then use them to guide your search for a holiday rental in Pyeongtaek-Si.
