Nonsan-si brings together waterscapes, cultural heritage and a variety of experiences. At Tapjeongho Lake, the lake and suspension bridge take center stage, alongside Confucian history, temple art, seasonal cherry blossoms and strawberry picking, as well as military-themed attractions. As you plan your trip, consider which of these aspects interests you most.

Lake, bridge and seasonal experiences

Tapjeongho Lake is considered the second-largest lake in Chungcheongnam-do and is known for its clear water and sunsets. A striking structure on the water is the 600-meter-long Tapjeongho Suspension Bridge. It is considered Asia’s largest pedestrian bridge over water and a landmark of Nonsan. Nighttime scenery, lighting and a skywalk give it its distinctive character. This means that both the landscape and a structure with its own character take center stage at the same lake.

In spring, two experiences that take place around April add to the attractions. Around this time, cherry blossoms along the road between Nonsan-si and Gwanchoksa Temple form a cherry blossom tunnel that many people use as a walking route. The Nonsan Strawberry Festival takes place annually around April and offers strawberry picking in the fields. Exact festival dates vary; if you want to experience the harvest, check the dates for your trip. For the other months, Surak Valley and Surak Waterfall in the Nonsan area of Daedunsan offer a different perspective on the landscape: both are known for their clear water and beautiful scenery.

Confucian heritage and temple art

Donam Seowon in Yeonsan-myeon is a historic Confucian academy. It honors the scholarly work of Sagye Kim Jang-saeng and his students, and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. In Gwanchok-dong, Gwanchoksa Temple is home to the standing stone statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva, a National Treasure of Korea. The Ssanggyesa Temple at the foot of Bulmyeongsan offers another example of artistic design: its Daeungjeon Hall, with its floral lattice windows, is designated Treasure No. 408.

The history of education and community life also has tangible sites here. Jonghakdang was established in 1643 by Yun Sun-geo as an educational institution for the children of his clan. Children from the clan and related families lived there together and devoted themselves to their studies. In Ganggyeong, the modern history street combines modern buildings with historic sites and is considered a cultural experience space. Together, these places offer different ways to explore history: an academy, a shared place of learning, temple art, and an urban area with both older and modern buildings.
