Huarmey lies on the banks of the Río Huarmey and at kilometre 293 of the Panamericana Norte. Known as a city of fishermen and farmers, it is shaped by a variety of local traditions. Its identity also includes the nickname “La ciudad de la cordialidad” (the city of cordiality), which reflects the welcoming attitude of its residents towards visitors. Planning a trip here means considering both experiences in the city and coastal destinations nearby.

Coastal Scenery and Beach Destinations

Playa Tuquillo is part of a well-known beach circuit from Huarmey that includes Salinas, Antivito, Maracaná, La Pocita and Médano. At Tuquillo, the coast forms a bay between hills. To the north lies La Pocita, a calm pool of water between rocks. Playa Antivito is considered suitable for surfing, bodyboarding and sport fishing; national bodyboarding championships have been held there. This coastal area therefore offers a range of distinct features: Tuquillo and La Pocita are described for their scenery, while activities are mentioned for Antivito.

The Route to Playa Boquerón de Manache

From Plaza Independencia in Huarmey, an approximately 2 km walking route along a dirt road leads to nearby Playa Boquerón de Manache. Along the way, you will see cultivated fields and agricultural activities. Trail conditions can vary. The route and the sights along the way are part of the outing, not just the coast at the destination.

The sea has shaped an inlet, or abra, at Playa Boquerón de Manache. Isla Manache is visible on the horizon, where cormorants and Patillos rest. Sport fishing is possible at the beach. Swimming is not recommended there, as the open sea and strong waves make the shore dangerous. Walking and landscape photography are alternative activities. Check local conditions before visiting.

Urban Traditions and Local Cuisine

The Virgen del Rosario is considered Huarmey’s patron saint and mayor for life. Her revered statue was carried through the city streets in a procession. Seviche Huarmeyano offers another glimpse into local tradition: it is prepared without fish and instead contains chanque, lenguitas, blanco and Yuyo.

In 2024, Huarmey held the Ruta del “Seviche Huarmeyano” for the first time. The route visited various restaurants and Wariques in the city, which competed for the best ceviche. The dish and the route reveal two sides of local food culture: the distinctive ingredients of Seviche Huarmeyano and a culinary event in the city.
