Isla Blanca: Island, Birds, and Guano History

Isla Blanca is a small island in the Pacific, west of the city of Chimbote and about four kilometers off the coast. It lies in Chimbote Bay. The Mirador Cerro de la Juventud, also called Cerro de la Paz, is a natural elevation north of Chimbote. Its highest point is about 350 meters above sea level; the viewpoint is at approximately 323 meters. From the natural viewpoint at the summit, you can see across the city of Chimbote and the bay.

The uphill route follows Vía de la Solidaridad from the Panamericana Norte. The trail is six kilometers long. Along the way are 14 crosses, and painted signs display short sayings and anecdotes about the trail’s origins. The climb thus combines exercise with a story told along the route.

The viewpoint also features Plaza del Niño, Plaza de la Amistad, and Plaza del Rosario. The 25.50-meter-high Cruz de la Paz stands there, with arms measuring twelve meters. The Santuario de la Vida includes a small church. The sanctuary also houses a 3.20-meter-tall wooden statue of Agustín Rivas, carved from a single piece of wood. The complex includes the Catacumba de los Mártires. Its dark tunnel symbolizes death and life in darkness; in this interpretation, passing through it leads to the light.

Coastal Culture in Chimbote and La Caleta

Malecón Grau runs along the seafront in Chimbote Bay, parallel to Avenida José Pardo and two blocks from Plaza de Armas. It is included in city tours of Chimbote. Its modern architecture is connected to the city’s fishing industry, offering a different focus from the natural experiences on the island or at the Cerro.

La Caleta also adds outdoor activities to the coastal attractions. During school holidays, these include walking, painting the landscape, and taking photographs. Beach volleyball and beach soccer are also played on the beaches in the La Caleta area.

Playa El Dorado in the Wider Region

Another coastal landscape can be found at Playa El Dorado in Nuevo Chimbote, in the wider region. The route leads west from the exit at kilometer 423 of the Panamericana Norte and passes through the village of Villa María. From there, a 9.5-kilometer road leads to the beach, with wetlands, dunes, and hills along the way.

A 100-meter stretch of beach is suitable for sunbathing and beach sports. The water is considered calm, clean, and suitable for swimming. The beach is visited in summer, from January to March. Activities promoted by tourism providers include boat trips, jet ski rides, and underwater fishing; seasonal availability may vary.
