Linares Province combines protected nature, activities at reservoirs and cultural discoveries in its towns. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you want to focus on a day hike, time by the water, thermal baths or museums. Each place and landscape has its own appeal—from a marked trail in a forest reserve to history and traditions in the villages.

Forest Trails and Protected Nature

In the Reserva Nacional Los Bellotos del Melado, the municipality of Colbún protects a natural population of the endemic Belloto del Sur (Beilschmiedia berteroana). One specific hiking suggestion there is the Sendero Los Bellotos: the trail is 4.5 kilometres long, takes about two hours in total and is rated moderate. Its length, approximate duration and difficulty rating give you useful pointers when planning a day hike and considering the demands of the trail.

The protected area can be reached from Linares via a gravel and dirt road. The access route passes through the Canal Melado Tunnel and the area around Embalse Ancoa and Roblería.

The Santuario de la Naturaleza Cajón del Río Achibueno offers a different natural experience. It is a protected area in Linares Province, in the Región del Maule. Its habitats include Belloto del Sur, Lleuque (Prumnopitys andina), Guindo Santo (Eucryphia glutinosa), Ñirre (Nothofagus antarctica) and Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio). For nature enthusiasts, this offers another way to explore the province’s plant life.

Reservoirs, Recreation and Thermal Baths

The artificial Lago Colbún in Linares Province is used for water sports in summer. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of activities, accommodation and tourist services there. Boat trips are offered at Embalse Bullileo, where recreational fishing is also possible. Sport fishing is also possible at Embalse Digua. Digua is also suitable for hiking and relaxation, but use of its shores is limited by ongoing fluctuations in water levels.

There are several places to choose from for an outing to thermal baths. Termas de Quinamávida features a large park, native forest, springs, and heated indoor and outdoor pools. Thermal, mud and steam baths are also available. Termas de Panimávida is a thermal bath complex in the municipality of Colbún; it includes a park, statues and fountains around the thermal hotel. If you are mainly looking for water and relaxation on your trip, you can compare these options with the activities available at the reservoirs.

Museums, History and Regional Traditions

The Museo de Arte y Artesanía de Linares preserves five collections protected as national monuments in Chile, with more than 3,000 objects. They cover art and crafts, as well as history and anthropology, archaeology and numismatics. The museum also promotes the visual arts and local and regional crafts. This makes Linares a cultural contrast to the province’s nature reserves and water sports destinations.

Historical and architectural heritage shape the character of Yerbas Buenas. Casa del Brigadier Pareja, now the Museo Histórico de Yerbas Buenas, is a protected historic monument. Spanish Brigadier Antonio Pareja stayed there on the night of 26 April 1813. Plaza La Recova, in turn, is shaped by colonial infrastructure, rural customs and local folklore. The Museo Histórico y Casa de la Cultura de Villa Alegre presents the town’s tangible and intangible heritage in five rooms. The Museo Municipal y Casa de la Cultura there is one of Villa Alegre’s oldest buildings: adobe, wood, a tiled roof and a courtyard surrounded by corridors are characteristic features of the house style typical of central Chile.

Regional food culture is also part of the province’s character. Villa Alegre is considered Chile’s national capital of chicha. This century-old local speciality is associated with the town’s vineyards; Villa Alegre is also characterised by its vineyards and orange trees. In San Javier, the vineyards are part of the Valle del Loncomilla wine zone, a subregion of Valle del Maule. Those interested in religious traditions can attend the Fiesta de San Sebastián in Panimávida, an annual festival featuring a procession.
