Talca Province
Accommodation in Talca Province
Along the coast of Constitución, the dunes of Putú stretch for more than 30 kilometres, while the Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay in San Clemente offers mountain landscapes and hiking trails. In Talca Province, you can choose from very different focuses for your trip: nature and outdoor activities, coastal scenery, or history and regional culture.
Mountain trails and inland landscapes
The hiking trails described in the Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay vary considerably in length and difficulty. The Laguna del Alto trail is 14 kilometres long, takes about eight hours in total and is considered challenging. El Peine is shorter at four kilometres, takes about three hours in total and is rated as moderate. This information gives you concrete points of reference for choosing an outing by distance and difficulty. The Reserva is located in the Región del Maule, in Talca Province and the commune of San Clemente; mountaineering activities take place there in areas with different levels of difficulty.
At 2,700 metres above sea level, Cerro El Peine is the highest peak in the Reserva. It should not be confused with the trail of the same name: the route information does not say that it leads to the summit. The landscape also has a notable history. Volcán Quizapú, in the commune of San Clemente, had a major eruption in April 1930, which peaked in 1932. At the time, ash reached from Rancagua to Chillán.
Dunes, coast and nature experiences
The Dunas de Putú near Constitución are among Chile’s most extensive dune areas. They stretch for 30 kilometres from the banks of the Río Maule to La Trinchera. In the Dunas y Humedales de Putú area, trekking, horseback riding and birdwatching offer different ways to experience the landscape.
Las Rocas de Constitución is a 108.4-hectare natural area on the coast. It extends from Los Gringos beach to the mouth of the Río Maule. The rocks provide nesting grounds for gulls, boobies, cormorants and pelicans. Those interested in birds and coastal environments will find a different natural focus here than in the mountain areas. Laguna Querquel is near Maule; you can fish and picnic there.
Cultural sites and regional history
The architectural history can also be explored at various sites in the province. In Pelarco, the Templo Parroquial San José dates from 1787 and is considered one of the oldest temples in the Región del Maule. The Santuario Inmaculada Concepción de Corinto is located in Corinto on the Río Maule; the current building dates from 1866. In Talca, the Puente sobre el Río Pangue is a Historic Monument. It was built between 1878 and 1880 and is considered the only surviving bridge of its kind.
The Casa Patronal de Huilquilemu in the commune of Talca is a historic museum monument. It preserves the region’s colonial architecture particularly well and includes rooms devoted to religious art. The Casa de la Independencia in Talca is also designated a Historic Monument and represents the colonial residential architecture of central Chile; it is known as the Museo O'Higginiano y de Bellas Artes. The Museo Arellano de Empedrado opened to the public in Empedrado on 24 February 1985. These sites offer different cultural and historical perspectives, from architecture and sacred art to the history of museums.
Another monument to regional history is the Ramal Ferroviario Talca–Constitución. The historic railway line passes through the communes of Talca, Maule, Pencahue and Constitución and connects the towns of Talca and Constitución. Estación Corinto in the commune of Pencahue is the line’s second station. For your planning, the railway is therefore primarily part of the province’s historical and geographical picture; the information provided does not describe a current service.
Crafts and flavours from Talca
Artisans work with clay and willow in the Unihue sector of the commune of Maule. Their pieces have been exhibited at national and international fairs. A typical speciality from Talca is Chancho en piedra, a paste or sauce made from tomatoes and chilli. It is prepared, among other places, at the Las Viejas Cochinas restaurant by the Río Claro. The Ruta del Vino Valle del Maule is a themed wine route in Talca, adding a culinary focus to the area’s cultural and scenic attractions.
For a trip focused more on nature, you can explore the mountain trails of Altos de Lircay, the coastal landscapes of Putú or Laguna Querquel; those interested in architectural history and crafts can choose other focuses. Places in Talca Province also include Talca, San Clemente, Constitución, Pelarco, Río Claro, Maule and Rapilermo.
