Purén brings together the history of the Mapuche people, historic buildings and nearby nature destinations. The Museo Mapuche, Fuerte de Purén and the landscape around waterfalls and wetlands give your trip a range of different focuses. When choosing a holiday rental in Purén, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore culture and local history, or also plan excursions into the surrounding nature.

Mapuche History and Culture in Purén

The Museo Mapuche de Purén is a public museum with collections covering archaeology, history and natural history. A permanent museographic exhibition is devoted to local history and Mapuche identity. Since 1983, the Museo Mapuche has also highlighted the history of the Mapuche people. The views and park surroundings of the museum form an area of scenic value. This brings cultural themes and a distinctive setting together in one visit.

Another historic landmark is Fuerte de Purén. The Chilean army had it built during the Pacification of Araucanía on the orders of Colonel Cornelio Saavedra Rodríguez; it was inaugurated on November 25, 1868. Distinct from this is Fuerte San Juan Bautista, a historical and cultural attraction about 1 km from Purén. It was founded on June 24, 1553, on the orders of Spanish Governor Pedro de Valdivia.

The town’s architectural history is also reflected in a range of places. Parroquia San Enrique was built between 1907 and 1910. Teatro Municipal Mal Gatica dates from the 1950s and has its own modernist architectural style. Ex Escuela Superior de Niños N°44 dates from 1920. It houses Biblioteca Municipal Luciano Huichalaf Alcapan and a Salón Patrimonial, where various cultural activities take place.

Plaza, Green Spaces and Nature Destinations

Plaza de Purén features a central fountain in the shape of a kultrún, as well as light displays. The plaza also includes native flora and fauna from the surrounding area. Parque Histórico de Purén offers green spaces, a play area and a viewpoint. If you would also like to consider a play area when choosing a location, it provides a specific point of reference, without implying anything about particular age groups.

Nearby, Salto Rayen is located on the Purén–Contulmo road at kilometre 9. The waterfall is 22 metres high and has a 17-metre cascade; native flora surrounds it. On the same road, at kilometre 7 in the Manzanal sector, Salto de Agua La Virgen waterfall is located within Centro Turístico Lawenco. Ruta Manzanal is a tourist loop along the Purén–Contulmo road. Among other places, it links Salto Rayen, Túnel Sanzana, Monumento Natural Contulmo and Salto La Virgen.

The nearby Monumento Natural Contulmo is described as a park with 120 native species and a 3.2-kilometre trail. The wetlands loop between Purén and Los Sauces offers another nature experience: it includes the Ipinco, Guadaba and Huitranlebu wetlands and is described as freely accessible. These destinations offer different experiences—from waterfalls and native flora to wetlands and a designated trail.

History and Visitor Information

Túnel Sanzana was the second tunnel on the former Ramal Purén-Lebu railway line. Construction of the rail network was completed in 1937, and train services continued until 1985. The railway was used to transport coal, timber and passengers. If you are interested in historic remains, note that the Petroglifos on the Purén–Contulmo route at kilometre 3 are on private property: you must ask the owner for permission to access them.

Admission to the Museo Mapuche is free; it is open to the public year-round, Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 20:00. Fuerte de Purén welcomes visitors Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10:30 to 14:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00. Parroquia San Enrique is open to the public Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00.

The town’s history also has a culinary connection: a fig coffee factory was established in Purén in 1897, and its finished product was called Moka coffee. Together with the museum, historic buildings and nature destinations, this offers a range of options for different travel interests. Tailor your search for a holiday rental in Purén to whether culture and local history, or destinations in the surrounding area as well, are especially important to your trip.
