Today, Lumaco is a small, quiet village whose history stretches from one riverbank to the other. It also carries memories of Kuralaba, insights into the history of settlers and the Mapuche people, and a local food culture. If you choose a vacation rental as your base, it is worth exploring the town’s cultural connections and other places within the municipality.

A village with a rich local history

Lumaco was founded on November 8, 1869. The town was first located on the Pichi-Lumaco River beside the fort. Because of frequent flooding, it was later moved to the south bank of the same river. This history explains why the river is not only a point of reference but is also connected to the town’s origins. A 2012 SERNATUR inventory classifies Lumaco as a local folkloric attraction in the category “spontaneous folk architecture” and the subtype “village.”

The Museo Histórico de Lumaco preserves and presents local history through objects and photographs of settlers and members of the Mapuche people. This brings different perspectives on the town’s history into view. Lumaco’s cultural character is also reflected in the term We Tripantu: in Mapuche culture, it refers to the celebration of the return of the sun.

Kuralaba and Mapuche Culture

On December 23, 1598, Governor Martín García Oñez de Loyola was killed in a surprise attack at the Kuralaba ford, opposite today’s municipal cemetery in Lumaco. The event is considered a major defeat for Spanish forces at the hands of the Mapuche during the Arauco War. The Lugar del Desastre de Curalaba is a regionally designated historic site in the Curalaba sector; Lumaco is the nearest urban settlement.

Lumaco’s Plaza Intercultural was also the venue for a Kuralaba event. A commemoration of Kuralaba in Lumaco combined a Feria Costumbrista and live music with a reenactment of the 1598 battle. More than a hundred local actors took part in the reenactment. These different connections make Kuralaba an important topic in the town’s history, without treating the ford, the historic site and the town of Lumaco as one and the same.

At a We Tripantu ceremony in Lumaco, Machi and Mapuche representatives from the municipality prayed together with the mayor beside a Canelo tree in the Plaza Intercultural. The interplay of cultural significance and a specific location gives the ceremony a distinct connection to community life. Another ceremony included a shared meal in the municipal sports hall: local and traditional Mapuche authorities went there to eat with the community.

Local Food Culture and Traditions

A 2019 municipal description calls the Fiesta del Cerdo Avellanero an annual tradition. It focuses on culinary knowledge about pork by-products and promoting the local “Cerdo Avellanero” brand. At one edition, hundreds of visitors gathered on Lumaco’s main street for a food event featuring a wide variety of dishes and local pork products. The festival thus connects local products with a culinary tradition that goes beyond individual dishes.

Distinguishing the town from the municipality when planning your trip

The municipality describes the Ruta Valle del Kuel as an annual event and documented its fourth edition in 2026. For the route, it lists guided visits in the Isla Catrileo sector along the Paillamil Kuel and the Pultreñerewe Kuel. The cultural, historical and heritage significance of the sector is highlighted. These visits take place within Lumaco municipality, in the Isla Catrileo sector.

When choosing a vacation rental, it is helpful to distinguish between the village and the wider municipality: Lumaco itself is described as a small, quiet village, while the Ruta Valle del Kuel leads to the Isla Catrileo sector. So consider whether your trip will focus mainly on the town’s history and cultural connections in Lumaco, or on visits elsewhere in the municipality. This will help you choose a base that suits your interests, without treating the town and the municipality as one and the same.
