Collipulli: Engineering, City History and the Malleco River
Accommodation in Collipulli
Collipulli brings together an extraordinary railway viaduct, city history, museums and the Malleco River. The Malleco Viaduct is not just a striking structure: it also tells the story of a state-led expansion of the railway network intended to provide a fast connection between southern Chile and the country’s central region. This gives you several focal points when planning a trip, from engineering and historic buildings to a visit to the river.
The Malleco Viaduct: Dimensions and History
The viaduct is 347.5 metres long and divided into five equal sections, each measuring 69.5 metres. The tracks are 102 metres above the bottom of the ravine. These figures illustrate the scale of the metal structure: the five sections give the structure a clear design, while its height above the ravine shows its exceptional proportions. The Malleco Viaduct is considered one of Chile’s most significant metal engineering works.
In its day, it was considered the highest railway bridge in the world. Today, under Decree No. 686 of 25 September 1990, the viaduct has been declared a National Monument in the Historic Monument category. Its historical standing and precise dimensions offer two different ways to appreciate the structure: its importance to the railway network and its engineering design.
Lookout and Activities
The Mirador Viaducto Ferroviario del Malleco is a designated viewpoint for taking in the viaduct and the surrounding landscape. A 2012 tourism inventory lists access via Ruta 5 Sur or the old road connecting Collipulli with the Bajo de Malleco sector. As this information is older, check current access conditions before setting out.
The same inventory lists landscape viewing and bungee jumping as activities at the viewpoint. This distinction is useful when planning: enjoying the landscape is different from taking part in a possible jumping activity. Check in advance whether bungee jumping is currently offered.
City History, Museums and Craft
The former municipal building of the Municipalidad de Collipulli stands at the intersection of Cruz and Alcázar streets. It was built between 1917 and 1920 to plans by architect Celindo Muñoz Rivera and housed the municipal administration for decades. The building thus links a specific location in the city to its former municipal use. The Casa Museo is a space dedicated to the development of culture, art and the heritage of the municipality of Collipulli.
Another trace of the past can be found at the private Museo Histórico de Collipulli at Bulnes 155. The history museum is housed in a former warehouse where wheat was stored in bulk. The former warehouse and the former municipal building tell the city’s story in different ways: one through its previous use as a storehouse, the other through decades of municipal administration.
The Franciscan monastery of San Leonardo de Porto Mauricio de Collipulli dates from 1869. Its simple façade follows the style of the Franciscan order; inside, it has a structure of pillars and naves typical of the late 19th century. A 2012 tourism inventory lists it as a religious attraction. If you are planning a visit, confirm current access arrangements locally.
Traditional crafts are also among the municipality’s cultural highlights. An article published in 2021 introduces the women’s group Alfarería Piutril Santa Ema, which makes Mapuche pottery in a workshop on Ruta R-23 in Huapitrío. The pieces mentioned include metawes, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic vessels, and items from the Pitrén and El Vergel cultures. These examples offer a concrete impression of the forms and cultural references found in this pottery.
The Malleco River and Planning Your Trip
At Balneario Sector Bajo Río Malleco, weirs form natural pools. A 2012 tourism description also mentions a swimming school there. As this information is based on an older inventory, check current conditions and facilities locally before visiting.
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: engineering and the viaduct, city history and museums, or the Malleco River. This lets you choose Collipulli based on the interests of your travel group, rather than treating the different experiences as one single itinerary.
