Bananal: Coffee, History and Nature
Accommodation in Bananal
Bananal brings together memories of the coffee cycle, historic sites, and the forests and waterways of its municipal area. In the town center, you’ll find a manor house and a long-established pharmacy; beyond the center, the landscape is also shaped by protected forest areas, waterfalls, and historic fazendas. When planning your trip, consider whether you’d prefer to focus on local history, nature spots, or both.
The Coffee Era and History in the Town Center
Solar Aguiar Valim, also known as Sobrado Vallim, is a historic manor house dating from the coffee cycle. Comendador Manoel de Aguiar Vallim had it built in Bananal, in the state of São Paulo, in 1855. The building gives a tangible sense of the town’s connection to that era and provides a setting for its history.
Pharmácia Popular is in the historic center. It is considered Brazil’s oldest pharmacy and, as of 2026, had been operating at the same location since 1830. The manor house and the pharmacy offer different perspectives: Solar Aguiar Valim recalls the coffee era, while Pharmácia Popular represents a long-standing tradition maintained at the same site.
Historic Fazendas in the Municipal Area
Fazenda Três Barras dates from the late 18th century. It hosted the Prince Regent Dom Pedro and President Juscelino Kubitschek; the furnishings from the period remain in the room JK occupied. These details bring the estate’s history to life without conflating the two visits into a single period.
Fazenda Resgate is a protected 19th-century fazenda, preserved in excellent condition. Fazenda dos Coqueiros, meanwhile, dates from 1855 and retains its architectural structure and furnishings. Together, the estates reveal different historical traces: visits and preserved furnishings at Três Barras, heritage protection and condition at Resgate, and construction date and furnishings at Coqueiros.
Atlantic Forest, Historic Trails and Waterfalls
Established in 1987, Estação Ecológica Bananal covers 884 hectares and helps protect one of the last remaining areas of Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo. Within the station is a preserved 800-meter section of the historic Trilha do Ouro. More than 300 years old and paved entirely with stones, the path was built by enslaved workers and is used for environmental education. This preserved section brings together the trail’s construction and history, as well as its use for educational activities.
In the municipal area, Trilha da Cachoeira Sete Quedas leads to the waterfall’s last two cascades. Swimming is permitted there without sunscreen. Visitor rules may change, so check the conditions before your visit. Another natural attraction is Cachoeira do Bracuí: a trail through preserved Atlantic Forest leads to the waterfall, whose five cascades have a combined drop of 1,100 meters.
Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay
When looking for a holiday rental in Bananal, your trip’s main focus can help you choose a good base: for Pharmácia Popular and Solar Aguiar Valim, consider staying near the town center; for nature and fazenda visits, compare your accommodation’s location with the places you plan to visit. From São Paulo, the route to Bananal first follows the BR-116, also known as Rodovia Presidente Dutra, then the SP-244/068, or Rodovia Deputado Nesralla Rubez, and finally the SP-068, also known as Rodovia dos Tropeiros. Check the road signs and conditions before setting out.
