Arandu: Reservoir, Farms and Tropeiro Cuisine
Accommodation in Arandu
Arandu combines a long stretch of shoreline along the Represa de Jurumirim with historic farms, chapel history and regional cuisine. The town’s history dates back to the time when the lands of a farm were divided; at the same time, the lakeshore and waterfall offer additional points of interest alongside the remnants of the past. This gives Arandu different ways to shape a trip: you may be most interested in the landscape and water, or in following the town’s historical and culinary stories.
The reservoir as a defining feature of the landscape
Arandu borders the Represa de Jurumirim for a length of 40,000 metres. This is a concrete part of the town’s geographic identity and makes the reservoir an obvious focus if you are interested in the landscape around Arandu. Arandu’s tourist attractions include the Represa Jurumirim and the Cachoeira da Fazenda Santa Rita. The two names represent different landscape features: the large body of water on the one hand, and a waterfall on the other.
Another precise location links Arandu to the water: Chalé Toca do Esquilo is in Portal do Catavento, on the shore of the Represa de Jurumirim. This location can be considered a separate point of reference alongside the town’s recorded history. When deciding what interests you, you can therefore weigh up whether the landscape around the reservoir or Arandu’s historical connections better suit the kind of stay you want.
Farms and chapels tell the town’s story
Arandu’s origins in the late 19th century are linked to the division of the lands of Fazenda São José do Letreiro around 1895. The farm has buildings that are more than a century old. This gives the town’s history a specific point of reference in time: Arandu’s development and the farm’s history are connected to the same division of the land, while the old buildings offer further evidence of the past.
Fazenda Jamaica also has its own historical connection. Its main estate house was built by the architect and artist Ramos de Azevedo, and its façade is designed in the colonial style. Another trace of religious history leads to a votive chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte, built at the confluence of Córrego do Barreiro and Ribeirão Bonito. This is distinct from the historic chapel associated with Arandu’s origins: it stood on the site where the parish hall is now located.
Tropeiro cuisine and a cycling tour as events
The 16th Queima do Alho de Arandu was a competition for typical Tropeiro cuisine. The dishes included Arroz Carreteiro, Feijão Carreteiro, Feijão Gordo and meat with potatoes. At this edition, the public was served typical cuisine at the Recinto de Exposições Atilio Silvestre in Arandu. The specific dishes give the culinary theme its own profile: as well as rice and bean dishes, the menu also included meat with potatoes. For families interested in regional food culture, these names in particular offer a tangible connection to local history and tradition.
A different example of an event connected to the landscape was Arandu’s 2nd solidarity cycling tour. Its 30-kilometre route followed the shores of the Represa Jurumirim. This describes the course of the cycling tour and complements the cultural themes with a sporting event. The 30-kilometre distance and lakeside setting distinguish this event from the Queima do Alho and its dishes.
Which side of Arandu is right for your trip?
If you are looking for a holiday apartment or house in Arandu, you can choose where to stay based on the interests you want to prioritise. The reservoir and waterfall are among the area’s landscape features; the farms and chapels offer a glimpse into the town’s history. The Queima do Alho and the cycling tour add specific examples of cuisine and community events to these themes. Arandu can therefore be seen as a destination that brings together landscapes, local history and regional traditions, without combining these different interests into a single itinerary.
