Rio Fortuna is surrounded by valleys and mountains and lies at the foot of the Serra Geral. Its vegetation is characterized by areas of Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. The Fortuna River is also part of the landscape: together with other rivers, it drains the municipal area and flows into the Atlantic drainage basin, which drains east toward the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors looking to combine nature and culture when choosing a destination will find both distinctive landscape features and local traditions and historic sites here.

Waterways and Natural Attractions

The Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes is a striking example of the area’s natural features. From Rio Fortuna, you can reach it via the access road to SC-108 toward Braço do Norte; the entrance is on the left, shortly after the gas station. A small woodland path leads from the grotto to the small waterfall behind it. The grotto and waterfall therefore make up a single excursion destination.

Another water-based destination is Cachoeira do Salto. It is 50 meters high and is located in the village of Salto do Rio Chapéu. While at the Gruta the woodland path leads to a small waterfall, Cachoeira do Salto is a distinct natural attraction thanks to its height. Visitors who are focusing on waterfalls and scenery can include these two different features in their plans.

Churches and Architectural History

The area’s religious history also offers specific points of interest. Paróquia São Marcos in Rio Fortuna has been in existence since 1950. Capela São Clemente in Rio Bravo Baixo was inaugurated in 1946, Igreja Luterana in Rio Claro in 1952, and Capela Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Rio dos Bugres in July 1971. The places and inauguration dates show that the religious history is not limited to a single building. For visitors interested in local culture, the different names and dates can provide a theme to explore.

Another piece of architectural history is Casa Enxaimel at Sítio Hemkemeier. Bernardo Hemkemeier built the house in 1931. The property is surrounded by an extensive garden with lawns, a stream and a lake. Casa Enxaimel is maintained and preserved with the aim of safeguarding the original character of this cultural heritage site. Thus, both the historic building and its described surroundings are among Rio Fortuna’s specific cultural and natural attractions.

Festivals, Culture and Local Cuisine

Expofortuna is a biennial trade fair covering multiple sectors that showcases the cuisine and culture of the people of Rio Fortuna. Its traditional program includes the Desfile das Realezas and the Simpósio de Piscicultura. One edition was scheduled to feature 82 exhibitors. The Festa do Padroeiro São Marcos is a traditional event held in late April and welcomes visitors from all over Santa Catarina. Another highlight is the municipal festival: as a German festival in Rio Fortuna, it revives the customs and traditions of the area’s first settlers. The events have different focuses, ranging from cuisine and culture to fish farming and local festival traditions.
