Macuco combines a history shaped by coffee growing with folklore, agriculture, and trips to Atlantic Rainforest reserves. As one of the eleven towns in the Caminhos da Serra tourism region, Macuco offers several ways to explore cultural and rural tourism: the route stretches from former coffee farms to ecotourism. When planning your trip, it is worth treating festival culture, insights into rural life, and nature activities as distinct areas of interest.

Coffee History and the Railway

Macuco’s history is closely linked to a railway line built in 1860. It connected the Baron of Nova Friburgo’s coffee farms, Boa Sorte, Gavião, and Laranjeiras; the aim was to make it easier to transport large harvests to Rio de Janeiro. Many coffee growers established their farms along the banks of the Rio Macuco. In this way, cultivation, transport, and the town’s development are all part of the same historical story.

A replica of the Maria Fumaça was unveiled in the town center as a tourist landmark. It recalls the railway’s history and adds a visible reminder to the historical traces of coffee growing. Those interested in Macuco’s past will find it a fitting place to start before turning their attention to its musical and festival traditions.

Folklore, Music, and Festivals

At the 53rd Festival de Folias de Reis, Macuco became an open-air stage for folklore on January 31 and February 1, 2026. Around 50 groups from various cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro and from the neighboring state gathered for this edition. Performances included religious banners, traditional costumes, poems, and rhymes. Musical instruments included drums, caixas, triangles, violas, and accordions.

The Sociedade Musical São João Batista is also an important part of local musical history: it was founded in 1910 and resumed its activities in 1980, bringing retretas and festivals back to life. The traditional festival in honor of São João Batista, the municipality’s patron saint, brings together expressions of faith, culture, sports, and entertainment. In June 2026, the festival drew residents and visitors together around a tradition that has endured for several generations. During the Alvorada de São João, the music society paraded through the streets, playing a repertoire ranging from classical to popular music.

Rural Experiences and Nature

Local farms open their gates to visitors, who can observe and take part in the daily lives of local families working in agriculture and livestock farming. A rural tourism tour introduced in 2019 also included the historic Fazenda Val de Palmas. This tour should be understood as an offering from that time; for nature excursions, the Atlantic Rainforest reserves offer opportunities for ecological tours. The trails there can be explored on foot, on horseback, or by bicycle.

Macuco’s agricultural character is also reflected in its events. Expo-Macuco is considered both an agricultural fair and a municipal tradition. The 2025 edition included Rodeio American Country and Fazendinha Kids. There, children got to know farm animals and have fun. At the craft and food fair held as part of the same edition, visitors could see locally made crafts and sample traditional dishes.

Agriculture, Crafts, and Cuisine

The Concurso Leiteiro offers another insight into Macuco’s agricultural events. In 2023, the 53rd competition was part of the Exposição Agropecuária; that edition lasted four days and included ten milkings. A rural tourism route described in 2023 also brought together regional products and cuisine: it visited workshops producing sweets, cheese, and artisanal cachaça, as well as stopping for lunch at Fazenda do Ribeirão Dourado. Rustic settings, manor houses, and ruins of old buildings are also considered places where visitors can enjoy local cuisine.

When looking for a vacation rental, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: festival culture, rural life, or ecotourism. Match your choice to the places and visit dates you have in mind. For festivals, check the latest dates; it is best to arrange visits to farms or historic estates in advance.
