Discover Carmo through its historic buildings, trails in the Atlantic Forest, and regional specialties. These different themes offer various starting points for planning your trip: you can focus on history, nature, or a festival featuring local cuisine.

Buildings and History in Carmo

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Carmo was built in 1876 and protected as national historic heritage by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN) in 1964. The Ladeira de Pedra is also part of the town’s history: it connected the municipal administration building with the square where the church stands. Since 2021, the Ladeira has been recognized as municipal historic heritage. The Capela Nosso Senhor dos Passos was inaugurated in 1902.

Other stops highlight different aspects of local history. Carmo’s Antiga Estação Ferroviária (Old Railway Station) dates from 1885. The Túnel que Chora was built to allow the former Maria Fumaça steam train to pass through. At Parque Natural Municipal do Livramento, a visit to the manor house can be combined with an exhibition inside. The museum there presents part of the history of the former Hospital Colônia Teixeira Brandão. These sites appeal to travelers who want to learn about Carmo not only through its landscape, but also through its architectural and local history.

Ecological Trails and Views

At Parque Natural Municipal do Livramento, ecological tourism combines visits to the manor house and the exhibition. Pedra da Lua is another option for walks along ecological trails, where visitors can observe the fauna and vegetation typical of the Atlantic Forest. Trilha Pedreira da Prata is in the district of Córrego da Prata and offers views of the state of Minas Gerais, the Rio Paraíba do Sul, and cities in the region. Each trail and viewpoint has its own appeal, from observing nature to looking out across the wider landscape.

Access to Mirante da Boa Ideia is two kilometers from the city center, and visitors are advised to go with the support of tour guides. Keep this in mind when planning a visit to the viewpoint. Serra da Prata is also part of the surrounding landscape: this area of ecological and recreational interest lies on the border between Carmo and Cantagalo. Ilha dos Pombos on the Rio Paraíba do Sul is also designated in Carmo as an area of ecological and recreational interest.

Nearby, on the border between Carmo and Cantagalo, Cachoeira da Prata is located on Fazenda São Lourenço. The Rio dos Quilombos forms the waterfalls there. Cachoeira da Prata is 7.5 meters high in total and consists of three smaller falls, each about 2.5 meters high.
