São José do Belmonte combines a striking rocky landscape with a cultural history reflected in places of remembrance and traditional events. Pedra do Reino consists of two large rocks in the Serra do Catolé: one is 30 meters high, the other 33 meters. The landscape and the town’s Sebastianist tradition are intertwined with their history.

Pedra do Reino: Rocks and History

Pedra do Reino was formerly called Pedra Bonita and is associated with the Sebastianist tragedy of 1838, in which 80 people were sacrificed. The Memorial da Pedra do Reino brings together paintings, books, documents, and photographs connected with the movement and the history of the place. It is located at Praça Pires Ribeiro 34 in the center of São José do Belmonte.

The Ilumiara Pedra do Reino also draws on these cultural references: it comprises 16 sculptures of saints, regional figures, and characters from a novel by Ariano Suassuna. The works bring together various religious, regional, and literary motifs, without requiring a single narrative to shape the entire visit.

Cultural Sites and Attractions

Castelo Armorial at Avenida Primo Lopes 248 is also in the center and serves as a kind of town museum. At more than 15 meters high, it is also a striking feature of the townscape. As addresses can change, it is advisable to check the location before visiting.

The tourist attractions in the municipality of São José do Belmonte also include Casa de Pedra de Lampião and Parque Urbano Pedra do Reino. Cachoeira do Letreiro is also one of the municipality’s attractions and is marked as a “winter season” attraction. This designation distinguishes it from Cavalgada à Pedra do Reino, which takes place annually on the last Sunday in May.

Cavalgada and Cavalhada

Cavalgada à Pedra do Reino was founded in 1993 and is inspired by legends of the Sebastianist movement, which formed part of the imagination of northeastern Brazil in the 19th century. Its route is 27 kilometers long and takes an average of six hours. If you want to plan your trip around the last Sunday in May, check the program for that year’s event.

The similarly named Cavalhada Zeca Miron is a traditional equestrian performance inspired by Iberian traditions. Twelve riders represent the twelve Peers of France from the legend of Charlemagne and the Twelve Paladins. Event programs have also featured different highlights: in 2025, Festival Multicultural was part of the official program of the XXXI Cavalgada à Pedra do Reino; the 30th Cavalgada in 2024 included a handicraft and food fair.

Getting Around and Choosing Accommodation

The municipal tourist map helps visitors find attractions and Cavalgada venues; an interactive online map also shows how to get there. Before making plans, check whether the map is currently available. In 2017, the Estrada da Pedra do Reino was improved to make access to the Sítio Histórico da Pedra do Reino easier. The municipality describes the Sítio as its main tourist attraction; check current road conditions before driving there.

When looking for a vacation rental, you can use your travel interests as a guide: the Memorial and Castelo addresses are in the center, while the drive to the Sítio Histórico follows the Estrada da Pedra do Reino.
