Exu is best discovered through the places associated with Luiz Gonzaga’s legacy. At Parque Aza Branca, music history, traces of his personal life and a glimpse into the town’s cultural history sit side by side. There is also an ecotourism destination and the ruins of Exu Velho. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether you want to focus mainly on culture, nature or both.

Luiz Gonzaga’s life at Parque Aza Branca

The Museu do Gonzagão is dedicated to Luiz Gonzaga’s life and career and is located in Parque Aza Branca in Exu. Its collection includes accordions, hats, leather sandals and leather clothing, as well as gold records and photographs. The range, from everyday objects to records and images, offers different points of interest: you may be interested in the music, or in the personal belongings and visual records associated with Gonzaga.

Next to the museum is the last, very simple house where Luiz Gonzaga lived. Parque Aza Branca also contains a mausoleum with his remains. The museum, house and mausoleum each offer a different perspective: the collection focuses on his life and career, the house on his everyday life at home, and the mausoleum on his final resting place. If you are travelling with several generations, these sites let you explore different interests through a shared cultural history, without everyone needing to engage with it in the same way.

Casa de Januário is also a house museum in Parque Aza Branca. Luiz Gonzaga’s father, Seu Januário, lived there until his death in 1978. The Ambientes de Origem e Memória de Luiz Gonzaga complex is protected as a heritage site because of its cultural significance. The complex includes Parque Aza Branca, with its integrated facilities, real estate and movable cultural assets. Its designation as a protected heritage site places these places of remembrance in a broader context that extends beyond a single museum.

The Santuário Ecológico do Cantarino offers a different perspective: it is an ecotourism attraction in Exu. If you would like to include an ecotourism destination alongside the places associated with Gonzaga’s legacy, you can consider them as different highlights of the destination. The ruins of Exu Velho, by contrast, focus on the remains of an old church: walls and arches have survived. The ruins are 13 km from Exu town centre. This distance is a practical difference between a stay focused on the centre and an itinerary that also includes Exu Velho.

Another destination linked here is Tabocas. For more travel ideas at the same level, you can also include Araçoiaba, Camocim de São Félix, Gameleira, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Ferreiros, Tracunhaém and Salgueiro in your search.
