Costa Rica combines landscapes known for the Cerrado and Pantanal with impressive waterfalls, nature experiences and a vibrant religious tradition. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: put nature and outdoor activities at the centre of your visit, or learn about the story of Santo Fujão. Natural attractions nearby also add to the range of experiences available.

Waterfalls surrounded by nature

Salto do Majestoso is located in Parque Natural Municipal Salto do Sucuriú. The waterfall is 64 metres high and surrounded by native vegetation. Its location within the nature park and the surrounding plant life shape the experience of this natural attraction. If you visit Costa Rica for its landscapes, this is a specific reason to turn your attention to its water and vegetation.

Another waterfall at the destination is Cachoeira das Araras, which is 30 metres high. The two heights clearly distinguish the waterfalls: Salto do Majestoso is 64 metres high, while Cachoeira das Araras is 30 metres high. Which height you find more appealing depends on your personal interests.

Trails, cycling and playgrounds

Parque Ecológico Viliboldo Rodrigues Barbosa has trails for walking, cycling and rollerblading. The park therefore offers several ways to get active outdoors. It also has children’s playgrounds. If you are travelling with children, you can factor this into your plans for possible activities together; it is a distinct feature of the park alongside its trails.

There is also a specific cycling route outside the park: a 910-metre-long cycle lane runs from Costa Rica in the direction of Alcinópolis. This information describes the lane’s length and direction. Costa Rica also offers hiking as an ecotourism activity. Both getting around on trails and cycling are therefore possible reasons to give nature and outdoor activities greater weight when choosing your destination.

The Santo Fujão tradition

Costa Rica’s cultural heritage includes Capela Senhor do Bom Jesus, which is associated with the legend of Santo Fujão. The tradition is celebrated every year on 6 August with a religious procession. The local community and pilgrims from all over Brazil take part. The fixed date makes 6 August a special point of reference for travellers interested in religious traditions and community celebrations.

Waterfalls and trails appeal to different interests than the procession and the legend. If you want to plan your trip mainly around the Santo Fujão tradition, the date of the celebration is key. For a stay focused on nature and outdoor activities, the waterfalls and parks described above can instead help guide your choice of itinerary.

Natural attractions nearby

Nearby, Parque Nacional das Emas features a rare glow in termite mounds. This phenomenon occurs after the first rains of the rainy season, usually from October to January. This timing is worth bearing in mind if you are considering nature-watching as part of your trip: the glow is linked to the first rains and this usual time of year.

Parque Natural Municipal da Lage is also nearby. It has a natural swimming pool fed by river water, a Biribol pool and water slides. Visitors can also reach the Rio Ribeirão de Lages from the park. Água Santa da Capela, a lagoon where people do not sink, is also located near Costa Rica. Each of these natural attractions offers something different: river water and pools, access to a river, or the distinctive lagoon.

When looking for a holiday rental in Costa Rica, your preferred focus for your trip can help guide your choice.
