Cururupu is known for its distinctive historic townscape and its access to the Arquipélago de Maiaú. Wide, grid-patterned streets, colonial mansions, and centuries-old squares define the town. The wider archipelago comprises dozens of islands, wild beaches, and traditional fishing communities. This distinction is helpful when planning your trip: the town’s architectural and cultural heritage sits alongside the natural and island landscapes of the wider region. If you combine the two on one trip, you can decide whether to focus on urban history and festive culture or on coastal scenery.

Townscape and Culture in Cururupu

The Igreja de São João Batista (Matriz) is an architectural landmark in Cururupu. Boi Prenda de Cururupu, associated with Bumba-meu-boi, is another local cultural tradition. Cururupu’s cultural calendar lists the Festejo de São João Batista in June as the patron saint festival of the municipality. The program includes novenas, processions, an Arraial, and performances of Bumba-meu-boi, Tambor de Crioula, and Quadrilhas Juninas. Architecture and festive culture offer different perspectives on Cururupu: one focuses on its built form, the other on the traditions and events mentioned here. If you’re planning a trip in June, you can check the specific festival dates in advance.

Coastal Landscapes and Protected Areas in the Region

The municipality of Cururupu lies within the Área de Proteção Ambiental das Reentrâncias Maranhenses, a protected area for the sustainable use of nature. This 2,631,260-hectare coastal plain encompasses islands, bays, sea inlets, channels, Igarapés, and mangroves. These habitats support and provide food for fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and migratory birds; the area’s coastal location also offers refuge to migratory birds. The Reserva Extrativista de Cururupu is another protected area in the coastal marine biome. It covers 186,053.87 hectares and extends across the municipalities of Cururupu and Serrano do Maranhão. The endangered marine manatee, Peixe-boi marinho (Trichechus manatus), is protected in the Resex.

The Parque Estadual Marinho do Parcel de Manoel Luís is also part of the wider region. This protected marine area lies in the Atlantic, 45 nautical miles off the coast, in the territorial waters of Cururupu. Tides are also important to consider when planning coastal and boat trips: in the Reentrâncias Maranhenses, where the Resex Cururupu is located, the tidal range during macrotides is 4 to 8 meters, with the cycle repeating every six hours.

Islands, Lagoons, and Fishing Traditions

On Ilha de Lençóis in the Resex Cururupu, dunes and seasonal lagoons shape the landscape. The island is also associated with exceptional biodiversity, a strong cultural tradition, and the legend of Dom Sebastião. Community-based ecotourism is available there. Praia de Guajerutiua, on the island of the same name, offers a different coastal landscape: dunes covered in Guajurus, a striking sunset, and a tradition of artisanal fishing define the beach. Praia do Guará (Iguará) is considered a center of artisanal shrimp production. It is surrounded by mangroves and is a habitat for the Guará. Together, these regional examples showcase different facets of the coastal landscape: island culture, seasonal nature, mangroves, and fishing.

Choosing Between the Town and the Coast

If you’re looking for a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what kind of trip you want: should Cururupu itself, with its townscape and local cultural heritage, be the main focus, or would you rather explore the region’s islands and coastal landscapes? This distinction can help organize your plans without treating different places as a single destination. At the municipal level, Cururupu is accessible via the MA-006 highway.
