Las Colonias Department invites you to include cultural history, nature and active experiences in your travel plans. Historic churches and museums tell the stories of the region’s towns, while nature reserves, botanical collections and outdoor activities offer other points of interest. With children, you might consider nature workshops and adventure courses, while regional cuisine and special events offer further insights into the character of the department.

Cultural History in the Communities

Templo San Carlos Borromeo was consecrated on May 13, 1862. Its significant historical value is tied to its religious importance in the origins of the San Carlos Centro community. Museo Histórico de la Colonia San Carlos offers another way to explore the past; it opened on September 24, 1978. In Esperanza, Museo de la Colonización documents the history of the city in Las Colonias Department.

Two churches recognized as National Historic Heritage sites are also located in Esperanza: Basílica de la Natividad de la Santísima Virgen and Iglesia Evangélica del Río de la Plata. Those interested in crafts can also learn about the history of Jorge and Roberto Peralta’s glass-engraving workshop. The brothers founded it in 1976 after becoming independent of Cristalería San Carlos. Using simple tools, they created a variety of designs on pieces of glass. The region thus offers religious history, local history and craftsmanship as distinct themes.

Discover Nature and Spend Time Outdoors

The Reserva Universitaria de la Escuela Granja de Esperanza is located in Las Colonias Department, 5 km from Esperanza. It was established as a 33-hectare reserve. The Jardín Botánico Municipal offered another botanical perspective: a collection of around 600 different plant species was presented there as part of an educational program on botanical classification. The rounded figure and focus on plant classification make the botanical emphasis clear, without requiring the two sites to be combined into a single route.

For nature experiences with children, Las Higueritas offers technology and biology workshops where children can explore nature and experience it firsthand. Its outdoor area includes a large grove, a soccer field, a children’s recreation area, a playground, outdoor restrooms and a small barbecue area. Be sure to account for the specific route: From Route 6, a turnoff west near San Carlos Sud leads to Las Higueritas; the route then continues for about 5 km on a gravel road. This information can help you locate the destination when choosing accommodation and planning your day.

Active Experiences and Special Events

X-RAZE AVENTURA offers multi-adventure courses led by instructors and designed for different skill levels. The activities are for everyone from preschool-aged children to adults. Esperanza also offers outdoor activities such as camping, sport climbing, rappelling, zip-lining, hiking, birdwatching, archery and orienteering. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between nature workshops, guided adventure courses and various outdoor activities, rather than treating all of them as the same kind of excursion.

Camping Municipal Intendente Bertero, on the Río Salado, offers another way to experience nature: it is located 7 km north of Esperanza and gives anglers access to the river. A regional event, the “1ª Vuelta departamento Las Colonias,” runs for three days through villages, squares and streets, bringing together stories, engines and historic cars. The Fiesta del Moncholo in Esperanza has been held every year in September without interruption since 1988 and is recognized as an event of provincial significance.

Regional Cuisine and Choosing a Town

The culinary scene includes Torta Alemana, a typical recipe from Esperanza that you can try at local bars, restaurants and bakeries. The town pages for Elisa, San Carlos Centro and Esperanza offer further guidance when choosing a place to stay in Las Colonias Department.
