Adobe architecture on old buildings, traces of the Aguada culture, and a route that leads from a paved road into a riverbed: El Condado and the described sites around Villa Castelli offer different ways to experience culture and landscapes. If you’re looking for a destination where you can combine historic sites with outdoor activities, you can plan your visit around your interests.

El Condado and its history

El Condado is a rural village whose old buildings showcase adobe architecture. Its history is also connected to Villa Castelli: the first settlers of Villa Castelli settled in El Condado. At the highest point in the village is the Capilla de la Virgen de la Merced, an important place of worship.

Those interested in archaeological and natural sites will find a different focus at Reserva Cerro El Toro. This protected area preserves significant remains of the Aguada culture: petroglyphs, terraces, galleries, and stone corrals. The different types of remains give the site a distinctive archaeological character. El Túnel provides a thematic contrast: this historic waterworks was built to supply the region with drinking water. Channels, sluice gates, and other structures have been preserved in the El Túnel area, showing its importance to water distribution in the department.

On foot, by bike, or on horseback

El Condado is ideal for walks, bike rides, and horseback riding, so you can plan your stay around different activities. A special option for cyclists is “Villa Castelli en Bici,” a planned cycling excursion that combines cycling with history, striking landscapes, and vibrant culture. The planned tour is scheduled to take place from September 6 to December 31, 2026, at the visitor center of the Cerro El Toro heritage site on Ruta Nacional N° 76, kilometer 154. If you’re planning a trip during this period, you can take this offering into account.

Quebrada del Yeso also offers a different way to experience the area. The route through the Quebrada is approximately 50 kilometers long. It is reached via El Condado on a paved road; from there, the route branches off into the riverbed. If you continue along the track, it connects with the road to Laguna Brava. This information helps you consider the route as a separate excursion, rather than mistaking it for a short walk in the village.

La Bajada adds a natural formation of sedimentary rock to the options. It is part of Villa Castelli’s adventure circuit.

Dates and travel interests

From September 4 to December 31, 2026, the Mercado Cultural will take place at the visitor center of the Cerro El Toro heritage site on Ruta Nacional N° 76, kilometer 154, in Villa Castelli. This event offers an additional, clearly defined opportunity to explore the cultural program in Villa Castelli. It is distinct from the planned “Villa Castelli en Bici” cycling excursion: both are scheduled for the same period at the visitor center, but they are different offerings.

When choosing a vacation rental or other accommodation, your planned activities can help you decide: are you most interested in village history and the chapel in El Condado, Aguada remains and waterworks, or activities such as cycling and the route through Quebrada del Yeso? If you’d like to combine several of these themes, compare the places you plan to visit and shape your travel plans around your choices.
