Cuesta de Miranda combines striking rock landscapes with a major stretch of Route 40: the 114-kilometre section connects Chilecito with Gral. Felipe Varela. Between narrow, deeply cut ravines, there are views across the valley and of the Río Miranda. For those interested in road trips and landscapes, this is a notable highlight of Chilecito Department.

Wine and nature offer their own reasons to explore. Bodega La Riojana Cooperativa offers a tour of its central winery in Chilecito, including its presses and fermentation tanks, ending with a wine tasting. Chilecito may therefore be a particularly good choice of base if this tour is among your desired experiences. Quebrada del Agua Negra is a seven-kilometre natural corridor surrounded by mountains, suitable for trekking and photo safaris.

Manor House, Gardens and Collections

Samay Huasi is in the San Miguel district and is a manor house built at the beginning of the 19th century. After Joaquín Víctor González acquired the house, he named it after the Quechua word for “house of rest.” The historic estate thus combines a specific building history with a name that evokes rest.

The gardens include the Puerta de Micenas and the Puerta Etrusca. The Puerta de Micenas is a gallery featuring roughly worked monoliths of the Seven Sages of Greece. The house also contains a small museum with archaeological, anthropological and palaeontological collections relating to minerals and natural sciences, including taxidermied native birds. Travellers who enjoy combining different aspects of culture and natural history will find this a distinctive place to visit.

Churches and Living Traditions

Several churches in the department reflect different periods of construction and local traditions. The Church of San Sebastián is in Sañogasta and forms part of the Circuito de las Capillas. Its first chapel was built at the end of the 17th century as a family oratory beside the Hacienda de San Sebastián. In Malligasta, the Church of the Inmaculada Concepción stands beside the main square and an adjoining cemetery; its surroundings are green and have a colonial character.

The Church of Santa Rosa de Lima in the Anguinán district was built in 1784. Santa Rosa is celebrated there every year on 30 August with great devotion, and the festivities include popular religious celebrations. In Vichigasta, San Buenaventura is considered the oldest church in Chilecito Department; it dates from the mid-17th century. Its original single-nave layout survives, with thick adobe walls and a wooden roof structure of rafters and purlins. The church is also part of the Circuito de las Capillas and was declared a National Historic Monument under Law 24.852 of 1997. Every year on 14 July, Vichigasta celebrates the feast day of San Buenaventura with a procession in which worshippers carry the image on their shoulders.

Industrial History and Further Discoveries

Those interested in industrial history can explore the ruins of the Fundición de Santa Florentina, with its walls, chimneys and remains of industrial facilities from the early 20th century. Station 2, “El Durazno,” of the Cable Carril also preserves parts of its original structure: the boiler and engine that powered the section between Stations 1 and 2. The Centro de Interpretación Tambería del Inca presents the pre-Hispanic Casa del Inga, regarded as the political, administrative and ceremonial centre of Tawantinsuyo and the provincial capital of Kollasuyu. Two hundred steps lead to the base of Cristo del Portezuelo.

When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to start by deciding what matters most to you: Chilecito is a good base for the winery tour, while churches, the natural corridor and historic sites appeal to different interests. This way, you can choose the places and experiences you want to shape your trip around, rather than reducing the department to a single way of exploring it.
