Mature trees are the focus of the 20 ha Taitua Arboretum. Lakes, woodland gardens and birdlife add to the setting, while a network of walking trails leads through its different areas. If you enjoy spending time in green spaces, there are several things to take in here: the trees, gardens, lakes or birds. The arboretum can therefore be experienced as a nature outing with different points of interest, rather than a visit centred on a single attraction.
The 60 ha Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park offers a different natural setting. Its features include a peat lake and wetland ecosystems where native plants are being re-established. Easy walking trails also make the area appealing to visitors who would like to include a walk in their stay. Compared with the trees and woodland gardens of Taitua Arboretum, the lake and wetlands take centre stage here.
Waterways, gardens and getting active
There are various ways to enjoy the water, too. The lake at Hamilton Lake Domain is used for dragon boating, waka ama, sailing, Sea Scouts and remote-control boat races. This range of activities makes the lake a place where different forms of water sports and community activities can be found; it does not describe a single event, but rather the lake’s varied uses.
For routes along the river, there are the Hamilton City River Rides and Walks. They are wheelchair-friendly and have numerous access points, parking options and conveniently located toilets. The Te Awa River Ride runs from the city centre to Hamilton Gardens and is suitable for bicycles, wheelchairs and pushchairs. If you would like to combine a trip to the gardens with a route, this trail is one option; the other River Rides and Walks can be enjoyed as a separate way to get active and explore the river.
Hamilton Gardens offer a different focus: their 18 extraordinary gardens represent journeys through time, culture and imagination. Expert-led highlight tours and an audio guide offer different ways to discover the gardens. If you would like to learn more about the design and the different garden worlds, you can include a tour or the audio guide in your visit plans. This garden-focused experience differs from the nature trails through the green spaces.
Urban discoveries and local experiences
Hamilton Zoo covers 25 ha and offers animal encounters led by experienced keepers. Hamilton Observatory turns your gaze further upwards: visitors can learn about astronomy and observe the night sky with telescopes. Hamilton City thus offers very different discoveries side by side—wildlife and encounters at the zoo on the one hand, astronomy and stargazing on the other.
Bridges also shape the city’s character. Victoria Bridge is a nationally significant steel arch road bridge and is among the finest bridges of its type built in New Zealand by a local authority. At Fairfield Bridge, its riverside location and the Art Deco buildings at both ends are among the features that define this local landmark.
