River landscapes, timber history and carved art give South Waikato District several distinct themes for a stay. The Arapuni Suspension Bridge, the NZ Timber Museum and the Talking Poles offer concrete starting points for getting to know the district beyond a single type of outing.

River, timber history and public art

The Arapuni Suspension Bridge is located on the Waikato River downstream from Arapuni Power Station. The river, bridge and power station form a clearly defined spatial relationship here. For travellers interested in waterscapes and engineering structures, the bridge is a particularly tangible feature of the district.

The NZ Timber Museum is located just south of Putāruru on State Highway 1 and offers the chance to see and experience the history of New Zealand’s timber industry. It was established in 1927 to celebrate, document and preserve this history—especially that of South Waikato District. This puts regional industrial history alongside the landscape in the spotlight.

In the centre of Tokoroa, you’ll find the Talking Poles, a collection of carved poles. They represent Tokoroa’s diverse cultures, clubs and organisations and were created for locals and visitors. For anyone interested in public art and a place’s cultural expressions, they offer a striking example.

Putāruru also has a striking art feature: Putāruru Waterpark has two large mosaics. Lake Moananui surrounds an artificial lake built by Matamata County Council in 1974/75. Together, the two places offer different perspectives on designed landscapes and public art.

For information, the Tīrau Information Centre is on State Highway 1 at the northern edge of Tīrau and has extensive parking. If this is important for your plans, check the details shortly before your visit.

Nature and culture come together at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari: its native forest is home to more than 730 native species, including kiwis and kākāpō. The Moa-Hunter experience there is an immersive cultural journey led by a mana whenua guide. For active days, Te Miro Mountain Bike Park offers varied terrain and trails for active families as well as particularly demanding mountain bikers. Native and planted forest surrounds the trails.

The Waitomo Caves also offer a variety of experiences. The cave network includes the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave. At the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a short boat ride through the glowworm grotto is part of the experience; Ruakuri Cave is wheelchair accessible and features extensive limestone formations and crystal structures. The wider Waikato is also home to Hobbiton Movie Set, which offers a guided walk through the 12-acre film set. The Signature Tour includes a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn.

If you’d prefer a longer hike, consider the Over the Mountain Track in Waikato. Including the Te Raki Track and Te Tonga Track, it follows a historic route to Pukeatua Peak, from Hicks Road in the north to Pukeatua in the south. The hike takes about five to six hours; from the southern peaks, views extend across the forest and Waikato’s lush landscape. Compared with the cultural and cave experiences, the time required is an important part of planning your day.

Choosing the right holiday rental

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you’d like to focus on: should your stay centre mainly on the river, timber history and art in South Waikato District, or would you also like to include experiences from the wider Waikato? Choose the sub-region and the specific location of your accommodation to suit these plans. This way, you can compare holiday rentals based on what you actually want to explore during your trip, rather than choosing accommodation based only on a general impression.
