Yarra City offers a wide range of discoveries: wetlands and bushland, parklands along the Yarra River and places with a layered history. There are also practical ideas for families, such as seeing animals and trying simple interactive activities at Collingwood Children’s Farm. Which of these aspects you’d like to focus on can be a good starting point when choosing your holiday rental.

Wetlands, bushland and riverside parks

Alphington Wetlands is the City of Yarra’s only nature reserve and natural resources park. It provides a refuge for a variety of locally rare frogs, waterbirds, mammals and reptiles. Several citizen science programs take place there each year, supporting public education and a better understanding of the natural environment. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy the landscape and learn about programs that focus on the environment.

Yarra Bend Park is Melbourne’s largest natural bushland park. The Dights Falls Loop Walk takes you through its rich history and varied landscape. If you’d like to visit the Grey-headed Flying-fox Walking Trail and viewing platform, you can reach both via the Bellbird Picnic Area. The Yarra River Parklands, meanwhile, comprise riverside parklands in the inner city. Burnley Park also offers more than six hectares of space and views of the Yarra River. These natural spaces offer different reasons to head out, and you don’t need to combine them into a single route.

Cultural heritage in the cityscape

Yarra has 54 heritage areas. These include town halls, factories, shopping streets, houses and parks, as well as civic spaces and places of significance to Aboriginal people. Curated heritage walks showcase this diversity. One example is the Richmond Hill Heritage Walk, which leads to historically significant places around Church Street, between Bridge Road and Swan Street in Richmond.

Richmond Hill was the highest point in Richmond. Churches and wealthier colonists were drawn there, leading to the construction of particularly grand early homes. A walk on Richmond Hill therefore draws attention not just to individual buildings, but also to the history of this distinctive neighbourhood. For a different perspective on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, try Yalinguth, a free app for a walking tour of Gertrude Street in Fitzroy. The audio experience features spoken stories, songs, poems and atmospheric soundscapes.

Public artworks in Victoria Park also recall the park’s important history. Commissioned as part of the park’s redevelopment, they offer visitors engaging and educational points of interest. In Burnley Park, the Corroborree Tree points to the significance of the place for the region’s Aboriginal people.

Gardens and experiences for different interests

The formal gardens and buildings of Abbotsford Convent are nationally significant for their heritage value, including their historic landscape and architectural values. The heritage-listed formal garden dates from around 1902 and preserves elements of an even earlier garden at Abbotsford House. The Heritage Garden and grounds are open 365 days a year and are suitable for picnics. The Capital City Cycling and Walking Path also runs right past the grounds, making it easy to combine a visit with an interest in cycling or walking.

If you’re travelling with children, Collingwood Children’s Farm in Abbotsford offers animals, open spaces and simple interactive activities. Fresh eggs and seasonal produce are available at the Farm Gate. If you’d like to include these experiences in your family holiday, they may influence your choice of destinations and holiday rental.

The proximity of Edinburgh Gardens to the Capital City Trail makes it easy to get there on foot or by bike. If you’d like to include routes like these in your trip, this may be a factor when choosing your accommodation. Another place to discover within Yarra City is Clifton Hill.
