Casey City combines glimpses into history with a variety of nature themes. At Wilson Botanic Park, more than 1,000 native and exotic plant species are set alongside wildlife that includes 80 bird species as well as turtles, frogs, lizards and snakes. The Casey Bushland Reserves offer a different focus: grassy woodlands, wetlands, coastal salt marshes and heathlands sit side by side. Rare and threatened species can also be found. If you like to fill your trip with nature and history, Casey City offers different themes to explore.

Plant diversity and different habitats

At Wilson Botanic Park, you can discover a wide range of native and exotic plants. With more than 1,000 different species, diversity is a defining feature of the park. There are also 80 bird species, as well as turtles, frogs, lizards and snakes that live there. Families might enjoy looking out for the differences between plants and groups of animals as they explore, without focusing their visit to nature on a single species.

The Casey Bushland Reserves showcase a different spectrum. Their more than 175 hectares of natural areas include grassy woodlands, wetlands, coastal salt marshes and heathlands. These landscape types sit side by side as different aspects of nature in the reserves; rare and threatened species are also part of their character. If you are most interested in nature during your trip, you can choose the botanical focus of Wilson Botanic Park and the diversity of habitats in the reserves as distinct interests.

History in Berwick and at the Old Cheese Factory

The Old Cheese Factory comprises the historic Springfield Homestead, the Cheese Factory and the Kitchen Wash House, all dating from the 1860s. A Heritage Walk with ten explanatory information panels introduces visitors to the site and Casey’s history. The combination of these three historic buildings and the panels gives your visit a specific focus: you can explore the site itself while also learning more about Casey’s history.

The Berwick Heritage Walk is a separate experience. It highlights Berwick’s historic heritage and leads through some of the oldest streets in Berwick. If you are interested in historic places, you can therefore choose between exploring the Old Cheese Factory and focusing on Berwick’s older streets. Each offers a distinct focus; they should not be considered a single walk.

Combine markets and travel interests

The Berwick Farmers Market takes place at the Old Cheese Factory on the second Saturday of every month from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. It offers fresh produce and handcrafted goods direct from the farm. Its regular schedule is useful when planning your visit: the market is a separate event whose opening hours you can fit around your travel plans. Alongside the Heritage Walk, the site also offers two different themes—market activity and the history of the site—to consider when deciding to visit Casey.

You can also include Narre Warren North among the destinations you are considering in Casey.
