Safety Beach combines a curving beach on Port Phillip Bay with lookouts and the Bay Trail. You can get your bearings along this stretch of coast using prominent landmarks: Arthurs Seat lies to the south, and Mount Martha to the north. There are also walking trails with a special stop for readers, as well as activities on the water. This gives you several ways to experience the area, with the beach, trail and foreshore facilities each offering something different.

A curved beach and coastal views

Safety Beach is 2.7 kilometres long and curves in an arc. Sheltered by Martha Point, the beach faces west. This shape gives the stretch of coast a distinct form. To get your bearings, look for Arthurs Seat to the south and Mount Martha to the north, two further reference points along the coast of Port Phillip Bay.

From the Safety Beach Pier, you can see the cliffs and look across to Arthurs Seat. The pier is a separate lookout point from the beach. The landscape along the Bay Trail has a different character: the section at Safety Beach runs beside the foreshore reserve, where there are few trees.

The Bay Trail and poetry pillars

There are eleven poetry pillars along the Safety Beach Bay Trail. Walkers can read the rhymes in sequence; the pillars are spaced 200 to 300 metres apart. Their order gives a walk a literary thread: instead of heading to just one point, you can follow the series step by step. The last poetry pillar stands north of the Martha Cove Underpass, at the start of the clifftop path from Tassells Beach to Pebble Beach.

Another described section of the Bay Trail runs from Safety Beach to Dromana. It begins at the Martha Cove Underpass and heads south, passing the Safety Beach Sailing Club. The directions and starting point help distinguish this section from the poetry pillar series when planning your walks.

Water activities and beach facilities

Stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing are popular in the clear, sheltered waters of Safety Beach. Water conditions can vary. The beach also has a boat and jetski launching facility, parking for boat trailers and a jetty. There is also parking near the Safety Beach Pier, including spaces for boat trailers.

There are three separate toilet blocks along the beach, as well as picnic tables and a playground. The options by the water vary: you can focus on the views from the pier, plan a break at the picnic tables or consider a water activity. Check local conditions if you plan to use the launching facility or take part in an activity on the water.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation

When looking for a holiday rental in Safety Beach, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the curved beach, a walk with the poetry pillars, the view from the pier or activities in the bay. These offer different starting points for planning your days.
